I was on my first trip to Gyeongsan and wanted a solid, filling meal, so I stopped by Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch.

It's on the 2nd floor of the Cheonma Art Center's main hall at Yeungnam University, so it wasn't hard to find during my Gyeongsan trip, and parking was easy too since the campus lot is free for 4 hours. Walking in, the place was bigger and more comfortable than I expected — clean and stylish, the kind of spot that would be nice for a relaxed meal with family or friends.

The floor-to-ceiling window seats near closing time

The window side of Cafe Dongi has floor-to-ceiling glass with a nice view outside. I went right around closing time, so there weren't many other customers, and I could enjoy the view quietly while eating. If you want a hearty Korean meal during a Gyeongsan trip, this kind of atmosphere makes it a solid Gyeongsan restaurant to know.

Free egg fry and five-grain rice at the Cafe Dongi self-bar

Cafe Dongi has a wide range of Korean dishes on the menu, and the self-bar here is set up neatly too.

Egg fry, five-grain rice, and barley candy are all free to help yourself to, as much as you like.

Apparently the rice used is top-grade gold rice grown in the DMZ's clean-zone area of Gimpo 👍👍👍 It was exactly what I needed on a day I really wanted a proper bowl of rice ✨

What the writer ordered at Cafe Dongi

While waiting, the food was brought out by a serving robot. I've seen restaurants with robot service here and there lately, but it was still fun to watch it roll over with the food.

Basic side dishes were pickled radish and stir-fried anchovies, along with a jjigae (stew). The default is doenjang jjigae, but you can switch to kimchi jjigae for an extra ₩1,000.

The stir-fried baby octopus paired especially well with the five-grain rice, and it was nice to have the egg fry alongside too.

The main dish, stir-fried baby octopus, was full of plump octopus pieces. What I liked most was that it came in an individual brazier, so the food stayed warm throughout the meal instead of cooling down quickly.

The octopus had a nice chewy texture, and dipping it in the mayo sauce softened the spiciness a bit for a different flavor. If you're visiting Gyeongsan and want a proper meal with rice and side dishes rather than something quick, this feels like a good Gyeongsan restaurant to remember.

I also ordered the grilled bulgogi, which had a subtle smoky char that went well with rice.

It tasted quite different from the stir-fried octopus, so if you're going with a group, ordering a variety of dishes to share seems like a good idea.

Nuruk tangsuyuk: 10% off with a main meal

I also ordered the tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), which gets a 10% discount when ordered alongside a meal set. Maybe because it's aged with rice nuruk (fermentation starter), the meat was chewy and the outside was fried crisp, making it a great match with the meal.

Nice touch to finish with a glass of omija (schisandra berry) drink 💗 I stopped by wanting a hearty meal on my Gyeongsan trip, and overall it was a comfortable experience — spacious dining room, easy parking, and a self-bar to boot.
