Gwangju choco pie bakery that takes local currency: Ssukseu Choco Pie

Today I picked up a 6-pack of choco pies from Ssukseu Choco Pie (쑥스초코파이), a dessert spot near Gwangju Songjeong Station! What sets it apart from Jeonju choco pie is the huge variety of flavors. The quality is great too, so I end up craving it and buying it every so often haha. The packaging is also so pretty that it's perfect to pick up as a gift right before hopping on the train at Songjeong Station!

Why Ssukseu Choco Pie over other bakeries near Gwangju Songjeong Station

There are a few bakeries scattered around Gwangju Songjeong Station — Sun Bakery near the entrance, and Ssukseu further inside! But I think I end up going to Ssukseu more often haha. It's just great for gifts!! The place stands out with its deep green interior accents.

Ssukseu Choco Pie sells choco pies of course, but also cookies, scones, and cheesecake! This time we picked up a 6-pack of choco pies. Then it was off to catch the train home.

The 6-pack came with Ssukseu Choco Pie's business card and brochure inside! Ssukseu Choco Pie also has a Seoul branch, so if you like it, you could visit that location too. There are so many menu items — next time I want to try the domestic soybean tofu scone and the mugwort cheesecake...

What comes in the 24,800-won 6-pack set

The choco pie 6-pack includes six flavors: Geomundo sea-wind mugwort, sea-wind mugwort injeolmi (rice cake coated in bean flour), sea-wind mugwort red bean, Jeju Udo peanut, Nonsan strawberry, and Gwangju real chocolate! Each package is neatly designed, with a cute, intuitive cross-section print showing exactly what's inside lol. Receiving this as a gift would feel really nice.

On the left is the real chocolate, and on the right are the sea-wind mugwort injeolmi and Nonsan strawberry — the soft cream is sandwiched between a densely baked choco pie sheet and coated in chocolate, and since the ingredient quality seems good, it wasn't too sweet and tasted great! The cross-sections are so, so pretty. The ingredients matched to each flavor were included without being excessive, so the balance was good too!

The Nonsan strawberry has a strawberry jam filling in the center, and it tasted exactly as delicious as you'd imagine, but the sea-wind mugwort injeolmi choco pie was seriously amazing!

The favorite: sea-wind mugwort injeolmi choco pie

The sea-wind mugwort injeolmi choco pie became my favorite flavor the moment I tasted it — the mugwort sheet came together with injeolmi cream and rice cake inside. One bite gives you the nutty aroma of roasted bean flour alongside a subtle mugwort fragrance, and it was perfect together with the soft injeolmi cream and the chewy rice cake. If you can only try one, I'd recommend the distinctively flavored sea-wind mugwort injeolmi choco pie!!

And here are the Udo peanut and sea-wind mugwort red bean flavors, which were perfect cut in half for a sweet fix on a lazy afternoon.

Personally I'm not a fan of heavy peanut butter flavors, but the Udo peanut flavor let the actual peanut taste shine through more, thanks to the crushed peanut bits on top of the sheet rather than peanut butter!! There were also a few chocolate chips tucked inside for good balance. The sea-wind mugwort red bean was tasty too, but the red bean's impact wasn't huge, so honestly the injeolmi was way more to my taste hahaha.

Is Ssukseu Choco Pie a good Gwangju souvenir?
