Charcoal-grilled short rib in Naewoe-dong, Gimhae: Wondaepo Sogalbisal
In short
Wondaepo Sogalbisal is an independently run beef short rib (sogalbisal) restaurant in a Naewoe-dong alley in Gimhae, Gyeongnam. A couple came for dinner and grilled one plate of marinated beef short rib (500g, 32,000 won) to medium over a charcoal grate, with lettuce wraps, seasoned chicory, pickled onion, water kimchi and self-serve garlic on the side. The meat at Wondaepo Sogalbisal was tender and free of any gamey smell, enough that even two light eaters could have finished a second plate.

Tonight was date night — our first proper dinner out in a while — and I was craving grilled meat. Specifically, beef short rib soaked in sauce. So we headed to Wondaepo Sogalbisal, a beef short rib spot in Naewoe-dong, Gimhae, where you can enjoy high-quality sogalbisal without breaking the bank.

What kind of restaurant is Wondaepo Sogalbisal?
Wondaepo Sogalbisal is an independently run beef short rib restaurant in a Naewoe-dong alley in Gimhae. Who doesn't love thick, juicy sogalbisal (boneless beef short rib), right? It's the kind of place I wish only I knew about, tucked into a lively Naewoe-dong alley — but honestly, the locals already know. Not a chain, just a proper local favorite.
Walking in, the space felt lively yet neatly kept, with a warm, welcoming vibe that's perfect for sogalbisal and a drink. A friendly staff member showed us to our seats.

Menu and prices: marinated 500g or unmarinated 400g, both 32,000 won
Looking at the menu: marinated sogalbisal is ₩32,000 for a 500g plate, and raw sogalbisal is ₩32,000 for a 400g plate. Since half plates cost the same as full ones, I'd actually recommend ordering a full plate but getting both the raw and marinated versions to try both flavors.
Besides the two signature dishes, they also serve Korean beef tartare (yukhoe), doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) as a rice meal, plus soju, beer, and non-alcoholic beer.

The meat here is what's called 'emperor short rib' — apparently only about 1kg comes from a single cow — and the sauce is made from freshly blended fruit, which is said to give it incredible depth of flavor. Their marinated sogalbisal is a taste I crave regularly, so of course I couldn't resist coming back today.
What side dishes come with the short rib?
After ordering, the charcoal was set up and the banchan that pair so well with sogalbisal were quickly laid out.

Fresh lettuce wraps and seasoned chicory, plus pickled onion and water kimchi to cut the richness — everything was set out clean and neat.

Grilling the marinated short rib medium over charcoal
Next came the marinated sogalbisal — the sauce wasn't heavy, more like a thin, transparent coating over the meat. The visible red color and evenly distributed marbling really showed off the quality of the meat.
Placed on the hot charcoal grate, the marinated short rib browned up nicely, and as the charcoal aroma soaked into the meat it got even more delicious. Since it's beef, we didn't overcook it — medium was just right for the texture.

Once perfectly grilled, we dipped the marinated sogalbisal in onion sauce, let it cool slightly, then popped it in our mouths — the tender texture and rich, savory juices were incredible. No gamey smell at all, so even eaten plain the meat's natural umami paired beautifully with the sweet marinade.

An after-work soju spot in Naewoe-dong
I loved the refreshing chicory salad and kept picking at it between bites. Everyone around us seemed to be winding down after work, having a soju or two at Wondaepo Sogalbisal. The average age of the crowd skewed a bit older, which made the atmosphere feel even cozier — and it says a lot about the meat quality.

Wrapping bites in lettuce between rounds meant we never got tired of it — we just kept wanting more. To give you an idea: my partner and I usually can't eat much meat, but here we could easily manage two plates, the meat itself was that good.

We also grabbed some garlic from the self-serve bar and let it cook slowly alongside the meat. Charcoal-grilled garlic was the best.

After filling up on sogalbisal, a cool sip of nabak kimchi broth washed away any richness from the meat, nice and clean.

Is Wondaepo Sogalbisal worth a second visit?
Great quality sogalbisal at a reasonable price, in generous portions — it's the kind of place that makes you a regular without even trying. Even now, I'm already thinking about going back.

If you're in Gimhae looking for genuinely tender, juicy sogalbisal, Wondaepo Sogalbisal nails both taste and value — how about heading over after work for marinated short rib and a beer? Two thumbs up from this couple.
Next time, we want to come back and eat even more of the raw and marinated short rib, and maybe round it off with doenjang jjigae and rice for a hearty dinner. A Naewoe-dong, Gimhae spot I'd genuinely recommend.
