Where is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch, and what is the dining room like?

Interior view of Hyangtaek Daebong Branch

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch carries the quiet, old-fashioned charm typical of the back alleys of Daebong-dong. It's close to the subway and right near the Kim Kwang-seok Street mural walk, which made it a perfect stop for a meal after a stroll.

The clean, warm wood-toned interior caught my eye from the outside. Even before stepping in, I was already excited to see what kind of food would come out.

The inside was just as tidy, with a calm atmosphere that's great for conversation. The space was neatly arranged and the lighting was warm, so my first thought was that it'd be perfect for a Daegu wedding invitation gathering or a meal to treat someone properly. There were plenty of people there for gatherings and dates too.

What we ordered at Hyangtaek: eggplant doenjang rice bowl and mackerel gondre rice

Looking at the menu, the signature dishes stood out, so after some thought we ordered the eggplant doenjang bowl (₩13,000) and mackerel gondre rice (₩14,000). As we waited at our table, neat, well-made side dishes were set down one by one.

You could tell a lot of care went into every piece of tableware, and the side dishes weren't over-seasoned, so they went really well with the main dishes. It was a clean, thoughtful flavor befitting a proper rice house, and I loved it.

How does the hanpan mushroom taste?

The hanpan mushroom is crisp like a chip on the outside, but the moment you bite in, the deep aroma and chewy texture of shiitake mushroom fills your mouth. Pan-fried until golden, it's incredibly savory, and thanks to the mushroom's own subtle umami, it's never greasy.

First up, one of the signature dishes: the eggplant doenjang bowl (된장 = fermented soybean paste). Golden pan-fried eggplant piled generously on rice, paired with a savory doenjang sauce — the combination was amazing.

The eggplant's naturally soft texture blended perfectly with the savory sauce for top-tier umami.

There was a generous amount of eggplant, so it was great to eat together with the rice all the way through.

The other signature dish, mackerel gondre rice, comes with a thick, hearty grilled mackerel fillet on top of gondre (thistle greens) rice. The mackerel had zero fishy taste, just clean and savory, and paired beautifully with the fragrant gondre — I ate it feeling completely at ease. Among Daegu's sotbap restaurants these days, it's rare to find a place that brings out the natural flavor of ingredients this well.

They didn't skimp on ingredients, so the portion was generous, and I felt healthier with every bite. Thanks to this warm, thoughtful meal, I finished eating feeling comfortable and satisfied.
