With mornings and evenings turning chilly, I've really been craving hot broth topped off with fiery red sauce lately! I doubt I'm the only one, haha🫢 Since I can never resist what I'm craving, after some searching I picked Seonghone Wang Kodari Dongtaetang, Icheon Seolseong Branch, a Seongho Reservoir favorite known for picking only fresh, good ingredients to bring out their natural flavor.

If you're one of those looking for a good restaurant near Icheon National Cemetery, this place would also work well for a hearty meal before or after a visit. I ordered the abalone seafood kodari (dried pollock) braise, and a cod jiritang (clear cod soup) came out as a complimentary side dish?! And it wasn't some skimpy freebie either — packed generously with ingredients, the broth tasted so refreshing...🤤 A sweet-spicy kodari braise plus a hot cod jiritang to clear your head — I got to enjoy both dishes to the fullest, so let me introduce this place properly.

Interior view of empty tables in a busy restaurant

Since the restaurant was full of customers, I could only photograph the empty tables. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable for a meal, and seeing every table enjoying a drink with their food made it clear this is a well-known spot among Icheon locals. Felt like I'd found a real gem😌

Side dishes and the complimentary cod jiritang

The side dishes started coming out — dried seaweed, stir-fried fish cake, napa cabbage kimchi, macaroni salad, and bean sprouts.

Just look at that sauce color — doesn't it scream delicious? I had a feeling one taste would knock me flat...

The cod jiritang, packed with fragrant minari, was full of roe, milt, sea squirt, and tofu — genuinely moving. I hadn't even been drinking, but it was refreshing and light enough to clear my head completely😎 The broth alone felt like a hangover cure — such a charming dish.

I ordered the steamed egg thinking it would pair perfectly with the kodari braise, and it was such a brilliant call.

How did the large abalone seafood kodari braise taste?

The kodari were king-sized, so the flesh was plump. The soft, moist kodari meat soaked up the flavorful red sauce perfectly, and I won't deny I lost myself eating it.

The abalone and shrimp were so plentiful there was no need to fight over them. Above all, the seafood itself was so fresh. It kept its bounce and chewiness intact — not an exaggeration to say it brought the whole ocean along with it.

The abalone seafood kodari braise comes with roe and milt included as standard, but since my daughters love roe and milt, I added extra, which made the dish even more satisfying.

The steamed egg bomb was loaded with cheese, nutty and pillowy-soft, and the seasoning was spot on — so delicious. I can't imagine what I'd have missed if I hadn't ordered it...

How to eat kodari braise with bean sprouts and dried seaweed

The owner casually walked by and tossed in a serving of bean sprouts for us, haha! Mixing them evenly into the kodari braise sauce, then wrapping a piece of kodari with cheongyang chili in dried seaweed, gives you spicy, sweet, sharp, and deeply savory flavor all at once — amazing!

Dipping it in wasabi soy sauce is also delicious! The sauce itself just clings to your palate so well that it's great no matter how you combine it.

I really pigged out on the kodari braise this time, so next time I'd love to fill up again with a hot, generous bowl of dongtaetang.
