Hello!! (´﹀`) I was walking along the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail and wanted some atmospheric Japanese dining, so I visited Orot Robata!

Where is Orot Robata, and where do you park?
📍Orot Robata sits between Gongdeok and Daeheung stations, in the retail complex of Gongdeok Park Xi Building 202. It's about an 8-minute walk from Exit 1 of Gongdeok Station.
🚗For parking, you can use the underground lot at Gongdeok Park Xi Building 202. They offer 1 hour of free parking at lunch and up to 2 hours free in the evening.

The entrance had a whopping six Blue Ribbon stickers. Knowing it's been steadily loved for a long time made me even more excited before I'd even eaten haha

Orot Robata is a premium robatayaki specialty restaurant from the Japanese dining brand 'Orot'! From binchotan and straw-fire charcoal grilling to seasonal sashimi, maki, nabe (hot pot), and tempura, there's a wide range of Japanese dishes to try. True to its name meaning 'by the hearth,' fish, seafood and meat are grilled over binchotan and straw fire to bring out the smoky flavor that suits each ingredient 🔥

Weekend evening visit: do you need a reservation?
We visited around 5:30pm on a weekend evening! When we first walked in there were still plenty of open seats, but not long after we started eating, the place filled up completely. And everyone else seemed to have reservations, so if you're planning a weekend visit, I'd recommend booking ahead. You can easily reserve for lunch or dinner through Naver!!

Seating and atmosphere inside Orot Robata
Inside, there were various seating types — 4-person tables, sofa seats, and bar seats. Overall it was well-organized, with a clean yet sophisticated atmosphere.

Being close to the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, it's also great for a slow walk before or after your meal. Enjoying the lush trail scenery and then tasting sashimi and charcoal grill made this Gyeongui Line Forest Trail izakaya well-suited for a date course too 🌿

There were also comfortable sofa seats good for conversation, and bar seats where you can watch the chef's cooking process up close. It felt like a good space not only for dates but also for small gatherings or work dinners.

Watching the charcoal grill in action
🔥One side of Orot Robata is an open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs cooking right over the charcoal. Seeing the ingredients grill through the glass made waiting fun in itself. Sitting at the bar seats in particular seemed like it would give you an even closer view of food cooking over the binchotan.

How to order with your phone by NFC
📱At Orot Robata, you can check the menu and order right from your seat using your phone's NFC feature. At first I thought, "How do I even order this?" but once I turned on NFC mode and tapped it near the marked spot, the menu screen popped right up.

The restroom isn't inside the restaurant itself but located separately elsewhere in the same building. There's a map and passcode near the register, so check before you go!
What we ordered at Orot Robata, and the prices
- Hosomaki ₩30,000
- Buta teki charcoal grill ₩24,000
- Kirin draft beer
- Nonalcoholic wine

The refreshing complimentary starter
Once we ordered, a house side dish of pickled cucumber and tomato arrived. The crisp cucumber and plump tomato added a refreshing tang that perked up my appetite. It was a great side to sip alongside wine before the main dishes arrived, and equally good for clearing the palate between bites of charcoal-grilled meat :)

White wine and the nonalcoholic wine
🍷To pair with the food, we ordered a white wine and a nonalcoholic wine. Since I haven't been drinking alcohol lately, I loved that they had a nonalcoholic wine option so I could still enjoy the vibe with everyone. The nonalcoholic wine had a much brighter, sharper acidity than regular wine — the first sip reminded me a bit of apple cider vinegar, so I thought, "Wait, is this a diet drink...?" haha. But as I kept drinking, it felt refreshing and light, and paired really well with the fattier charcoal-grilled dishes.

How does the hosomaki (30,000 won) taste?
🍣The first dish to arrive was the hosomaki (thin seaweed rice roll) — small Japanese-style rice rolls topped with a variety of fish like tuna, salmon, and scallop. With so many colorful fish varieties on top, it looked gorgeous the moment it hit the table! It looked so different from the maki I usually see that I was even more curious how it would taste.

Tasting it, the fish-to-rice ratio was great, but what stood out most was how perfectly seasoned the rice was. Not too sour or too sweet, just enough to bring out the natural flavor of the fish — I found myself thinking, "How did they get the rice seasoning so exactly right?" ㅠㅠ

It was easy to pop in your mouth in one bite, and each type of fish brought a slightly different flavor, making it the most fun dish of the day to eat. If you like maki or sushi, you have to order this at Orot Robata!

Donteki charcoal-grilled pork (24,000 won): sweet and savory
🥩Next up was the buta teki charcoal grill, grilled over binchotan. Pork coated in a special sauce and charcoal-grilled, its sweet-and-salty flavor was the highlight of this dish.

I'd heard the grilled dishes at Orot Robata were good and went back and forth deciding what to order before picking this. One bite in, and the meat wasn't tough at all — it was tender and really delicious!

The salty special sauce combined with the subtle smoky flavor immediately made me want a beer.

It went well with white wine too, but next time I'd love to have it with a cold draft beer or a highball haha. If you want proper charcoal-grilled food at a Gongdeok izakaya, I'd recommend the buta teki charcoal grill :)
Final verdict on Orot Robata
Orot Robata was a Gyeongui Line Forest Trail izakaya where you could enjoy sashimi, maki, and binchotan-grilled dishes in a clean, sophisticated space. When we visited at 6pm on a weekend evening, most seats were already reserved, and the place filled up quickly not long after. If you're planning a weekend evening visit, I'd recommend booking ahead! Whether you're looking for a good izakaya near Gongdeok or Sogang University for a date, or an atmospheric bar to visit after walking the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, I'd recommend Orot Robata ෆ
