Mapo Japanese dining bar for robata grilled pork: Orot Robata
In short

A cozy robata dinner in Mapo

While looking for somewhere to have dinner with a friend around Mapo, I finally visited Orot Robata (오롯로바타), which I’d had my eye on near the Gyeongui Line Forest Park! It is a premium robatayaki specialist from the Japanese dining brand Orot, so we got to enjoy a dinner with a little more atmosphere ☺️

What were the open kitchen and window seats like?
When we walked in, the restaurant’s open kitchen let us watch the chefs cooking directly over charcoal. It was fun to watch while waiting for our food, haha. On nice days, I heard they open up the folding-door window seats fully so you can enjoy them like a terrace. It seemed like a great fit for anyone looking for a date spot with a good atmosphere in Mapo, or dinner after a walk along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park.
As its name suggests, Orot Robata centers on robatayaki, Japanese charcoal grilling. It uses premium binchotan charcoal and straw fire to grill fish, seafood, and meat, while also serving à la carte dishes such as sashimi, nabe hot pot, and fried dishes.
What we ordered

- Charcoal-grilled donteki pork ₩24,000
- Ankimo brûlée ₩18,000
- Yuzu highball ₩11,000
- Non-alcoholic wine ₩12,000

The subtle charcoal aroma of grilled donteki pork
We started with the charcoal-grilled donteki pork. It is pork grilled over binchotan charcoal with a special sauce. As soon as it arrived, that subtle charcoal aroma came through—so good.

The pork was nicely browned on the outside while staying fairly juicy inside, and the special sauce gave it a savory, gently sweet umami flavor.
It was delicious on its own, but it went even better as something to have with drinks.
My first ankimo brûlée

The dish I was most curious about that day was the ankimo brûlée. It is a mousse made by blending monkfish liver with Japanese miso, served with baguette. It is not something you see often, so I really wanted to try it.
It was fun to tap-tap and crack the top. The monkfish liver had its signature rich, nutty flavor, while the Japanese miso added savory depth.

Spread on baguette, the soft mousse and crisp bread worked beautifully together. It may feel a little unfamiliar at first, but I think anyone who likes monkfish liver would enjoy it 👍🏻
Yuzu highball and non-alcoholic wine
Of the drinks we had that day, the yuzu highball on the left was easy to drink thanks to its refreshing yuzu aroma. It also paired nicely with richly flavored food like charcoal-grilled dishes. My friend ordered the non-alcoholic wine, which was great because even someone who cannot drink can still enjoy the atmosphere, haha.

For unusual Japanese bar snacks in Mapo
Overall, Orot Robata felt a little closer to a dining restaurant than a typical izakaya. The open kitchen where you can watch food being cooked over charcoal, plus the terrace-like window seats, made the space itself quite appealing. With a varied drinks list including highballs, Japanese shochu, sake, and wine, it looked useful for everything from a first-round meal to a second-round drinks stop.
If you are looking for an izakaya-style bar in Mapo and want robatayaki with a real charcoal aroma or unusual Japanese bar snacks rather than the usual menu, it is worth visiting at least once!! It also seemed like a nice choice for a date or blind date in Mapo: not too loud, but still atmospheric. If, like me, you are looking for a Mapo izakaya bar and craving something a little special, enjoy robatayaki and a range of Japanese dishes at Orot Robata 🤎
