Sea urchin cream pasta bar dinner in Gongdeok, Seoul: Orot Robata

In short

Orot Robata is a Japanese dining bar on the first floor of Gongdeok Park Xi in Mapo, Seoul, listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey for six years running. Arriving at 5:30pm with a coworker, we took bar seats for sea urchin cream pasta and tomato kaisen nabe with added fresh noodles, the smoky char from the grilled vegetables making the broth especially memorable. A cozy spot for catching up over dinner.

Life's been so busy lately, hasn't it? I've been swamped too. But after a long while, I finally got to enjoy a cozy dinner date with a coworker who's really on my wavelength!

We'd both been too busy to have any real conversations, so it was such a healing time catching up over good food. Today I'm introducing a hotspot in Gongdeok — Orot Robata.

The excitement of stepping into Orot Robata

Early evening, and the entrance to Orot Robata glows under warm lighting. The exterior is modern yet clean, and out front, a blue stand reading 'Blue Ribbon Survey, 6 consecutive years' next to the menu board caught my eye right away.

I'd come once before at lunchtime but turned back in tears at the long wait — this time I walked in right at 5:30pm, full of anticipation.

A cozy space for deep conversation

The moment you step in, you feel the soft, mellow mood! Black-toned interiors harmonize beautifully with wood tables. The scenery outside the window blended with the lighting made it feel really snug.

We took seats at the bar table, where we could watch the cooking happen right in front of us — never a dull moment. Seeing the neatly set tableware just made me feel good. Ordering was easy too, done via NFC touch right on the table.

Our first pick: sea urchin cream pasta

Finally, the first dish arrived — our top pick, the 'sea urchin cream pasta'! Both my coworker and I let out a cheer the moment we saw it. Piled generously with fresh sea urchin roe, its umami-packed look grabbed our attention instantly.

The rich, creamy sauce, chewy noodles, and the flavor of sea urchin together delivered a mouthful of pure delight. If you're looking for truly delicious sea urchin cream pasta, this is a must-try.

Beyond expectations: tomato kaisen nabe

For our second dish, we debated between motsu nabe and tomato kaisen nabe (seafood hot pot), and went with the tomato kaisen nabe. And what a genius move that was! A pot brimming with rich tomato broth, topped with fresh tomatoes and a mix of ingredients, drew a gasp the second it arrived.

The eggplant and zucchini seemed to have been grilled over open flame before going in, because that subtle smoky char was absolutely the best. Loaded with shrimp, baby octopus, clams and more, the broth was so rich and bursting with umami.

The smoky char from the grilled vegetables soaked into the tomato broth and seafood, taking the flavor up another notch.

We added fresh noodles to it, and thanks to the rich broth, it turned into a gorgeous pasta all on its own! Getting to enjoy both the deep flavor of the nabe and a fresh noodle pasta was the best two-in-one choice.

The reason behind 6 years of Blue Ribbon

The dignity of that 'Blue Ribbon Survey, 6 consecutive years' sign I saw at the entrance made total sense by the end. This place was full of flavor, atmosphere, and warmth that truly matched its reputation. I wanted a highball or a beer, but I'd driven, so I held myself back.

A happy dinner date with a coworker after a long while — Orot Robata's warm atmosphere and wonderful food made it an even more special, memorable evening.

For anyone who needs a bit of healing amid a busy daily grind, or wants a cozy time with someone special or a colleague, I highly recommend Orot Robata!
