Dongdaemun shabu-shabu restaurant with value meat add-ons: Shabu Torang

In short

Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a shabu-shabu restaurant in Dongdaemun, Seoul. While managing my diet, I chose the house broth with beef brisket, beef chuck roll, and bunmoja, and loved how quickly the induction cooktop brought it to a boil. Verdict: great-value add-on meat makes this a 200% revisit-worthy spot.

Seating for solo diners through families with children

Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch has a range of seating, from single and two-person tables to four-person tables. There was a constant stream of solo diners, couples on dates, and parents with elementary-school-aged children, so I could not even photograph the four-person seating..

Restaurant seating with tablet ordering

In fact, a guest next to me had come with a child. Since every table can order on a tablet, they let the child try everything from choosing the menu to paying. Because it is not a shared kiosk, children can try it as an educational experience without inconveniencing anyone else—and the child looked like they were having fun. I should become that kind of parent someday.. noted.

A meat-and-vegetable-focused order while dieting

I have been taking personal-training classes and managing my diet lately, and when even the smell of chicken breast makes me feel like throwing up, I turn to shabu-shabu. If you focus on meat and vegetables, it is the ultimate menu: you get your protein and still have a delicious meal.

One-person shabu-shabu order

Shabu Torang has so many broth options that I debated for a while, but since this was my first visit and I am dieting, I chose the house Shabu Torang Shabu broth. Next time, I am going to try the sukiyaki broth! The Shabu Torang broth stood out for its clean, light flavor.

So I added plenty of meat, plus bunmoja as a little gift to myself..^^

Soy sauce that paired beautifully with the light broth

Shabu Torang had three sauces: chili sauce, soy sauce, and peanut sauce. I am normally absolutely on team chili sauce whenever I eat shabu-shabu or pyeonbaek-jjim (steamed food in cypress trays), but Shabu Torang's soy sauce was seriously delicious.

Chili, soy, and peanut sauce selection

Perhaps because the Shabu Torang broth is so light, the soy sauce paired incredibly well with it.

What I really loved while eating at Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch was the induction cooktop... Sometimes, when I go for shabu-shabu, the broth does not boil and I end up waiting forever. Here, it came to a boil quickly, which was so nice. Perfect for my impatient personality.

Choosing the house shabu broth and beef brisket

Shabu Torang Shabu

Shabu Torang house shabu broth

After an intense debate with mala shabu-shabu, I kept my conscience clear and chose Shabu Torang Shabu. Shabu Torang Shabu is the restaurant's house shabu-shabu broth, with a light, clean flavor. You can choose beef brisket, beef chuck roll, or chicken breast; I chose beef brisket.

After eating dry chicken breast, I was craving tender beef brisket so badly, and choosing it really was the right decision. The meat was high quality with a good fat ratio, and it practically melted in my mouth.

Meat and vegetable add-on prices

Meat + vegetable add-on

Meat and vegetable add-on menu

For the meat + vegetable add-on, you can likewise choose beef chuck roll, beef brisket, or chicken breast. The beef chuck roll and beef brisket portions are 50 g, while chicken breast is 60 g. If you do not need more meat and just want vegetables, you can also add half vegetables for ₩2,000.

Shabu Torang's prices are generally all so good that even if you keep adding things, the total does not come out as high as you would expect.

Meat add-on

Beef chuck roll meat add-on

Adding meat costs only ₩3,800.. Shabu Torang's value is seriously good. Beef chuck roll and beef brisket are 90 g, while chicken breast is a whopping 120 g. I briefly considered the chicken breast because of the difference in grams, but I just could not accept it, so I held onto a little conscience and chose beef chuck roll.

The beef brisket was high quality, but the beef chuck roll was genuinely great too. This quality of meat for ₩3,800? Completely satisfied.

Bunmoja with mala broth next time
