In short

Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch is a shabu-shabu restaurant in Dongdaemun, Seoul. We shared the standard broth and buttery sukiyaki, then chose egg porridge and cream risotto to finish. Verdict: a warming, filling meal for a cool day.

The weather has gotten so wonderfully cool lately. There’s a breeze too! I visited somewhere that would be perfect for a cool evening: Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch (샤브토랑 장안직영점).

Shabu Torang is apparently shabu-shabu + restaurant! The Jang-an branch is a great shabu-shabu spot in Jang-an-dong.

Shabu-shabu with toppings and finish dishes to choose from

See the photos for the menu! There were more toppings to choose from than I expected, which was great. There are also so many different finish dishes to pick after your shabu-shabu! Pasta, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), egg porridge, and so on and on—seriously, so many haha. So I went with a friend, and it was deliciously warming in the cool weather.

Standard broth or sukiyaki—what did we choose?

My friend and I each ordered a different broth. Shabu Torang has five broths, so you can choose what suits your taste! I chose the standard broth, while my friend chose sukiyaki. Let me start by saying: the smell of that sukiyaki was insane hahaha.

What we ordered

Shabu Torang order selection

I told you the sukiyaki smelled incredible..! I think it is because they first build up that rich, nutty flavor with butter and then pour in the broth—it becomes so much richer and tastier, honestly. Add all kinds of vegetables and rich beef brisket to this savory, salty Shabu Torang sukiyaki broth and it gets even better hahaha.

And the standard broth was the familiar kind we all know! Clean-tasting and mild haha. There were three meat choices—beef brisket, pork shoulder, and chicken breast—and I picked the chicken breast because I was curious how it would come out!

Standard broth and chicken breast

It was thinly sliced chicken breast haha. I thought chicken breast would suit a more strongly flavored broth, such as tomato soup or sukiyaki, better than the standard broth... haha.

We also ordered some extra toppings. The assorted topping plate came with boiled dumplings, fish balls, wide glass noodles, and rice cakes; it was affordable too, so it was easy to add on.

Shabu Torang has three sauces too! Sukiyaki comes with a raw egg as well~ The shabu-shabu at Shabu Torang Jang-an Direct Branch was so good! Delicious haha.

Finishing with egg porridge and cream risotto

And I said you can choose a finish dish at Shabu Torang Jang-an, right? We chose egg porridge for the sukiyaki broth and cream risotto for the standard broth, and wow, these were so good. Shabu Torang Jang-an was perfect right through to the finish dishes.

Since they were porridge and risotto, we had to keep stirring, but they became thicker and even more delicious the more we stirred haha. I was stirring away going, “Get even more delicious!” hahaha. If you’re wondering which finish dish to choose at Shabu Torang Jang-an, I recommend the cream risotto and egg porridge!!!

What about the wait, solo seats, and parking?

Oh, and Shabu Torang Jang-an! This really is a great shabu-shabu spot in Jang-an-dong!! The wait during mealtimes looked fairly long. Luckily, we avoided it, but there can be a wait, so keep that in mind if you’re coming for a meal!

There are lots of people dining alone too, so I hear it is also known as a good solo-dining spot in Dongdaemun~ There really were so many solo diners on the day we visited! There is counter-style seating, which makes eating alone comfortable, as well as table seating, so you can eat comfortably by yourself or with others. There is parking behind the building, but it is narrower than expected, so keep that in mind too~
