Lately, I’ve felt like my immune system is down for no reason and my whole body has been dragging, so I was really craving something hearty that could give me a boost!! At times like this, galbitang (Korean beef short rib soup), with its hot broth and generous meat, is the best, right? Haha. So I visited Hoegi Wang Galbitang, a galbitang specialist near Hoegi Station!! With the slow-simmered galbitang and their homemade seokbakji (cubed radish kimchi) on the side, I had a properly filling meal!

Hoegi Wang Galbitang

Hoegi Wang Galbitang, a galbitang specialist near Hoegi Station
As you can tell from the name, Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a Hoegi Station restaurant that specializes in galbitang!

True to a specialist restaurant, the menu is quite simple! There are four types of galbitang and galbijjim (braised short ribs), so you can choose according to your appetite or preference that day, haha. Since I was there to recharge, I ordered the classic Revitalizing Galbitang!!

Ordering the Revitalizing Galbitang
Revitalizing Galbitang ₩16,000 Hoegi Wang Galbitang apparently puts a great deal of care into preparing and simmering its ribs. Every day, the ribs are soaked for 12 hours to draw out the blood and washed clean, then parboiled with various ingredients for about an hour. The fat-removal and trimming process also takes over six hours.

Then they add ingredients and seasoning and simmer it again for two hours to finish the galbitang, so it takes much more work than you might think for one bowl to arrive!! Especially since they make their seokbakji themselves rather than using a ready-made product, you can really feel the care that goes into it!!
Unlimited refills, from misutgaru to barley snacks
And there was one more thing I loved at Hoegi Wang Galbitang!!

You can enjoy unlimited refills of barley snacks, rice, misutgaru (multigrain powder drink), and side dishes, haha.

Before the galbitang arrived, I tried a cup of Grandma’s 17-Grain Misu Powder drink first. It was nutty and sweet, so it was just right for a light drink before the meal!!

The barley snacks were crunchy and nutty too, so I kept reaching for them, lol. Misu powder with barley snacks…

It was absolutely perfect for my grandma-style taste buds, hahaha.

Galbitang with huge rib bones served whole
At last, the Revitalizing Galbitang I’d been waiting for appeared!!

It arrived bubbling away in a huge ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl), and the portion alone was impressive. But the first thing that caught my eye was, of course, the enormous rib bones!! There were two huge bones, each with plenty of meat attached, and just looking at them made the meal feel satisfying, haha.

Best of all, perhaps because they had been simmered for so long, the meat was unbelievably tender. Just a little touch with the chopsticks and it slid right off the bone!!

There was no need to pull hard at it—the meat separated so softly that it was easy to eat.

A generous pairing of meat and rich broth
The meat matters in galbitang, but you can’t leave out the broth either!! There was plenty of it, and although clear, it had a properly deep beefy flavor. Since it came in a hot ttukbaegi, it stayed warm throughout the meal, so I could enjoy it piping hot to the last bite!! Take a bite of the big rib meat, have a spoonful of hot broth, then add some crisp homemade seokbakji—the combination is complete!!

Putting the glass noodles, rib meat, and rice together on one spoon and taking a huge bite is seriously delicious, lol.

Having the chewy glass noodles and tender meat in one bite made it feel even more generous and filling!!

Plus, the rice is unlimited, so on a hungry day it’s great to get another bowl and soak it well in the broth, haha.

One bowl of galbitang is already generous, and with unlimited rice too, I think it would be especially perfect for anyone looking for a hearty lunch!

When you want a hot Korean meal near Hoegi Station
From the huge rib bones and plentiful broth to the homemade seokbakji, Hoegi Wang Galbitang made for such a satisfying meal! The ribs, simmered with care for a long time, were wonderfully tender, and with the rich broth and homemade seokbakji, it truly felt like I’d taken good care of myself with a proper meal!

When your energy is low like it has been lately and you’re craving a hot, hearty meal, I recommend the Revitalizing Galbitang!! If you’re looking for a good restaurant or meal near Hoegi Station, Korean food near Kyung Hee University, or a lunch spot in Hwigyeong-dong, try a steaming bowl of galbitang at Hoegi Wang Galbitang!!
