Dongdaemun Korean BBQ restaurant with free naengmyeon: Anhung Galbi

In short

Anhung Galbi Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Dongdaemun, Seoul, serving handmade pork ribs with more than 40 years of history. I had a 250 g serving of charcoal-grilled pork ribs with marinated crab, bossam kimchi, and complimentary dessert naengmyeon. Verdict: a generous, full-course-style pork rib meal.

Lately, I’ve been craving sweet, savory pork ribs with that lovely charcoal aroma, you know? So, for the first time in a while, I went for proper pork ribs at Anhung Galbi Main Branch (안흥갈비 본점), a true longtime meat restaurant that has held its spot in Jang-an-dong for over 40 years!

Even from the outside, the sign reading “handmade pork rib specialist with 40 years of tradition” and the longtime-restaurant marker made its experience feel obvious before I even stepped in. The dining room was kept clean, with plenty of tables and good ventilation, so I could eat comfortably without worrying about the smell of meat lingering on me.

250 g of pork ribs per serving, said to be aged for 48 hours

As soon as I sat down and looked at the menu, the meat portion was what I liked most! At many rib restaurants these days, a serving is usually around 180–200 g, but Anhung Galbi gives you a whopping 250 g of pork ribs per serving. It really felt generous.

Anhung Galbi says it carefully scores selected Korean chilled ribs and pork neck, then low-temperature ages them in its special marinade for 48 hours before serving them. Even before they went on the grill, the marinated meat looked as though the seasoning had soaked right through, and it looked wonderfully juicy.

Neat complimentary side dishes, including marinated crab and bossam kimchi

After I ordered and waited a little, a tableful of clean, neatly arranged side dishes arrived. The complimentary spread was seriously substantial!

From the spicy-sweet marinated blue crab that got my appetite going before the meat was cooked, to fresh, peppery pa-muchim (seasoned scallion salad), flavorful bossam kimchi, and hearty doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), everything came as part of the basic spread. My chopsticks were busy even before the meat was ready! Every side dish had that unmistakable homemade touch.

Juicy pork ribs grilled directly over charcoal

Strong-burning charcoal arrived, and I gently laid the 48-hour-aged pork ribs on the wire grill. Since they were grilled directly over charcoal, a gentle, nutty smoky aroma rose the whole time they cooked and had my mouth watering.

I first tried a nicely browned piece of rib plain, without dipping it in anything. Maybe thanks to the 48-hour low-temperature aging, it was not tough at all; juicy meat juices burst out as I bit in, and it went down so tenderly! The marinade was neither overly sweet nor heavy, just the right sweet-salty balance, so I could keep eating it without getting tired of it.

Wrap it generously in fresh lettuce with peppery scallion salad, grilled garlic, and ssamjang (savory soybean dipping paste), and it is an absolutely perfect combination.

Finish with complimentary dessert naengmyeon when you order meat

One of Anhung Galbi’s best perks is that a dessert portion of naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) is free when you order meat! You can choose mul-naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) or bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles), and I asked for the refreshing mul-naengmyeon. The chewy noodles and chilled broth, with little pieces of ice floating on top, cleared my palate beautifully. Topping it with a piece of pork rib I had saved gave me that happy flavor everyone knows! 😉

After finishing my meal, I could also pick up nostalgic three-flavor ice cream and freshly brewed coffee at the dessert corner near the entrance! Ending with cool ice cream completed a perfectly satisfying meal.

A Jang-an-dong meat restaurant that delivers on taste, portions, and variety

Just as you would expect from a beloved longtime Jang-an-dong meat restaurant, the flavor, portions, and service were all beyond my expectations!

  • Taste: The tender texture created through 48-hour low-temperature aging and the subtle, natural charcoal-marinated flavor are excellent.
  • Value: With a generous 250 g of meat per serving plus complimentary dessert naengmyeon, the value is truly outstanding.
  • Spread: From substantial sides such as marinated crab and bossam kimchi to a dessert corner with ice cream and freshly brewed coffee, it feels like a full course.

If you are looking for delicious charcoal-grilled pork ribs or somewhere for a family meal near Janghanpyeong or Jang-an-dong, I definitely recommend visiting Anhung Galbi Main Branch! 😊
