Junggye-dong shabu-shabu with 2-hour free parking: Hana Shabu Shabu

In short

Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch is a shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi (cypress-steamer) restaurant on the first floor of the Brownstone Junggye building in Junggye-dong, Nowon, Seoul. For dinner the writer ordered the basic seiro-mushi for two: vegetables and meat steamed about 20 minutes in a cypress box, served with sesame, chili and yuzu ponzu sauces, filling enough that no extra order was needed. The building's large underground garage registers 2 hours of free parking, so driving to Hana Shabu Shabu is easy too.

There's plenty of legroom under the tables, so it was more comfortable to sit than a typical bar counter.

Hana Shabu Shabu menu and prices: lunch and dinner

Hana Shabu Shabu's signature dishes are shabu-shabu, where you cook meat and vegetables in house-made vegetable broth, and seiro-mushi, steamed in a cypress steamer. For meat, you can choose a combination of brisket and sirloin, or a sirloin-only option. On weekdays, lunch menu pricing runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., while weekends and holidays use dinner pricing.

Hana Shabu Shabu lunch menu price list

For weekday lunch, shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi are relatively reasonably priced at ₩23,000 to ₩26,000. The basic shabu-shabu comes with meat, vegetables, and udon noodles, while seiro-mushi consists of meat and vegetables. The course menu, which adds rice and dessert to the basic set, runs ₩27,000 to ₩30,000, and the premium menu, which adds marinated prawns to the course, is ₩32,000 to ₩35,000.

After 5 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays, dinner menu pricing applies. The dinner menu comes with more meat than lunch, making it more filling. It also has the same course and premium options with rice, dessert, and marinated prawns. If you run short on meat or vegetables during the meal, you can order extras like brisket, sirloin, assorted mushrooms, or udon noodles separately. We visited for dinner, and the portions of meat and vegetables were generous enough that we were completely full without ordering anything extra.

Beyond that, the menu also includes rice dishes like gyudon and mentaiju, along with various add-ons such as octopus, live octopus, katsuo marinated prawns, and brisket/sirloin tadaki. Lunch looked like a solid value, while dinner offered a generous course setup for a filling meal.

Dinner seiro-mushi, basic set for two: honest review

Salad served before the main dish

We ordered the basic seiro-mushi for two from the dinner menu. Before the main dish arrives, a light salad is served to wake up your appetite. The sauce paired with the fresh vegetables was delicious, and I cleaned the plate while waiting for the main dish.

Meat and vegetables packed into the cypress steamer
Generous napa cabbage and mushrooms as seiro-mushi ingredients

Inside the large cypress steamer, meat came packed generously with a variety of vegetables including napa cabbage and mushrooms, leaving no gaps. Everything looked fresh even before it was steamed, which built anticipation. At first I worried the portion might be a bit small for two people, but the variety and quantity of vegetables turned out to be more generous than expected, and we ended up completely full without ordering anything extra.

Seiro-mushi cooking on the steamer

Seiro-mushi requires about 20 minutes of steaming time in the cypress steamer after you order. That wait can feel longer than expected, so if you want to start eating right away, shabu-shabu, which you cook yourself immediately, might be a better choice.

Complimentary tadaki served on the house

Instead, they served us tadaki on the house to enjoy while we waited, so the wait didn't feel as boring as it might have.

Seiro-mushi finished after 20 minutes, with steam rising

After about 20 minutes of waiting, the finished seiro-mushi arrived with warm steam and the scent of cypress rising from it, looking appetizing just to see. The vegetables, steamed moist by the vapor, kept their texture and natural sweetness intact, and the meat was tender and fresh without any gamey smell.

Rather than being seasoned with strong sauces, this dish lets you enjoy the natural flavor of the meat and vegetables in a clean, light way. With generous vegetables and nothing greasy or heavy, it felt like a healthy yet satisfying meal.

Sesame, chili, and yuzu ponzu sauces

Sesame, chili or yuzu ponzu — which sauce works best?

The sauces served alongside were sesame sauce, chili sauce, and yuzu ponzu sauce, three in total. Each had its own appeal, from nutty to tangy and refreshing, so it was fun to alternate depending on my mood. All three were tasty, but personally the rich, nutty sesame sauce paired best with the meat, and I kept going back to it.

There's a cooking wait to consider, but being able to enjoy generous vegetables and fresh meat in a healthy, tasty way made the wait worthwhile. If you want a filling meal that isn't overly seasoned, or if you generally like vegetables and clean flavors, this could be very satisfying.
