Gua sha jawline and neck facial in Nowon, Seoul: Ryeowon Skin Care

Lately whenever I looked in the mirror, my face just felt heavy and stiff. I don't usually notice it, but on photo days or mornings with a bit of puffiness, my jawline and cheeks look especially tight and congested. I hadn't had a contouring facial in a while and my whole face felt heavy, so I figured it was time for a proper session.

It's about a 3-minute walk from Nowon Station, either Line 4 Exit 9 or Line 7 Exit 3, so it's convenient to reach by public transit.

Building parking is available, but I heard it can fill up, so if you're driving it's worth knowing about the nearby public parking lots or the Lotte Department Store parking as backup. I parked at Lotte Department Store and used a coupon in the app for 2 hours free.

Inside the relocated Nowon studio

Maybe because it's a newly relocated space, Ryeowon Skin Care felt bright and clean the moment I walked in.

There's a full window so it didn't feel cramped, and the waiting area was fairly spacious too. I also liked that you change into indoor slippers before going in, which keeps the interior clean.

The powder room had a hair dryer, sunscreen, and other basics for touching up after treatment, so even if you have plans that day it doesn't feel too inconvenient.

Consultation first, then the contouring facial

At Ryeowon Skin Care, when you arrive they first do a quick check of your current skin condition and usual concerns.

I especially mentioned how my whole face felt stiff and my jaw area felt congested.

After the consultation I moved to the treatment room. Since it's mostly one-on-one care, it felt fairly private. Once I changed into a gown and was ready, the contouring treatment began in earnest.

Cleansing: a calm start to the session

First came cleansing to clear the skin. It wasn't harsh at all — the whole thing was done gently. After smoothing out the skin's texture, a hydrating product was applied to reduce friction, and then the manual contouring massage really began.

How the contouring facial at Ryeowon Skin Care felt

You'd think contouring facials need painful pressure to be effective, but Ryeowon Skin Care's approach felt different from that. Rather than heavy pressure, it felt more like gently pressing to find and release the tense spots.

Especially around the cheeks and jaw, it was surprising how tense those areas could get — spots I don't normally notice felt really relieving to have worked on. It wasn't just the face either; the massage extended down to the neck and shoulders, which made my whole face feel lighter overall.

Gua sha along the scalp, ears, jaw and neck

After the manual massage came a gua sha step, working from around the scalp down to the sides of the ears, the jaw, and the neck line. This part also wasn't a hard scraping motion — more of a smooth, flowing feeling, so it didn't feel like much of a burden.

I especially felt a big sense of relief around my lower jaw and the sides of my ears. Before the treatment my face had felt heavy and sagging downward, but afterward my whole face looked a bit more defined.

Soothing mask and moisture to finish

After the treatment, since the skin can get a little flushed, they finished with soothing products and a mask. There was a short rest period with the mask on, and I nearly dozed off.

At the end, they finished up with mist, moisturizing cream, and nourishing cream. Right after the treatment my skin looked dewy and my whole face felt noticeably lighter.

The biggest change after one Ryeowon session

More than any dramatic visual change in photos, what I personally felt most was that my jaw area was much softer and my whole face felt lighter. My face usually feels like it spreads out toward the bottom, but after the treatment it felt more centered and gathered, which was satisfying.

I don't think one contouring session completely changes things — it's more of a treatment you get consistently to maintain your condition. Still, there was a clear feeling of my face being refreshed after just one visit, so I think it'd be good to get before an important schedule or event.
