Sinchon sundae-guk and galbi mandu for three: Pyeongando Sikdang

In short

Three diners ordered mixed sundae-guk (pork blood sausage soup), meat-only gukbap and galbi mandu (rib dumplings) for 30,000 won in total, and the pork-bone broth, simmered 24 hours, came out clear with little gaminess. What three of us ordered: galbi mandu, mixed sundae-guk, meat-only gukbap

The menu was huge, but we ordered galbi mandu (rib dumplings), sundae-guk (mixed), and meat-only gukbap.

Basic side dishes including kkakdugi and baechu kimchi

Side dishes: kkakdugi, cabbage kimchi, chives, chilies and onion

The basic side dishes — kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), baechu kimchi, chives, peppers, and onions — had all the essentials covered, and the kkakdugi in particular was refreshing, perfect for cleansing the palate. I'm usually a baechu kimchi person, but the kkakdugi here was so good I ended up eating almost only that, haha.

Mixed sundae-guk: clear broth with glutinous and traditional blood sausage

When the piping-hot sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) arrived, my first impression was, "This broth is clearer than I expected!" And the portion is really generous too! It's one of the restaurant's signature dishes, made with pork-bone broth simmered for 24 hours, giving the soup a clean, clear taste without much gaminess. It's packed with head meat and both types of sundae (glutinous rice sundae + traditional sundae), so you can pick and choose to your taste!! It's chewy and soft, going down easily even while hot. Eating it with the salted shrimp on the side is pure bliss.

The broth is very rich, making it perfect as a drinking companion or a hangover cure, and I liked that you could season the gukbap yourself with salted shrimp, minced seasoning, salt, or perilla seeds.

30,000 won for three — how big are the portions?

All of this came to just ₩30,000...! That's cheap compared to today's prices. The rice portion was generous too.

Meat-only gukbap with lean meat only

Meat-only gukbap: lean pork with no fat

The meat-only gukbap comes with no fat, just lean meat, so I'd highly recommend it as a dining-out spot for anyone managing their diet! The portion was really generous, with a good mix of sundae, lean meat, and specialty cuts, so I polished off the whole bowl without getting tired of it.

A plate of Pyeongando Sikdang's galbi mandu

Galbi mandu at 6,000 won: the old-fashioned dumpling taste

The galbi mandu (rib dumplings) tasted exactly like the nostalgic version I remembered! Great value, savory and salty, and it paired really well with rice. Hard to believe it's only ₩6,000.

Sometimes after eating gukbap my stomach feels heavy, but here the broth was clean and didn't taste of MSG, so I felt comfortable afterward too. Also convenient for eating fast and heading out on a busy day!
