Spicy haejang-guk set at Sinchon soup restaurant Pyeongando Sikdang
In short
Pyeongando Sikdang Sinchon Branch is a sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) and haejang-guk (spicy hangover soup) restaurant in the alley across from Sinchon U-PLEX in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. On a weekday lunch visit, the sundae-guk with intestines set (14,000 won) and the spicy haejang-guk set each arrived with generous sides of boiled pork and sundae, so much that neither plate was finished, and the owner added a free canned drink. The spicy haejang-guk set at Pyeongando Sikdang is filling enough in both portion and spread to make you wish you had a glass of soju with it.

This is probably one of the last times I'll be commuting through Sinchon...! So I was wondering what to eat for my final meal here, and since I fell in love with the bone haejang-guk when Pyeongando Sikdang first opened, and people around me kept telling me to go there today, I chose Pyeongando Sikdang Sinchon Branch!

Where is Pyeongando Sikdang Sinchon Branch, and what's on the entrance menu board?
Pyeongando Sikdang Sinchon Branch is located in the alley across from Sinchon U-PLEX — I don't think it was there before, but the menu boards and standing signs out front looked really nice!! I was going to get the bone haejang-guk, but after seeing the menu board and sign out front I decided to go in for the spicy haejang-guk instead haha (I didn't drink the night before, I promise haha)

Solo bar seats and group tables: what lunchtime looks like
Pyeongando Sikdang Sinchon Branch had a bar table set up for solo diners, and the long stretch of space in the back seemed to be mostly used for group reservations!! Even though I came at lunch, there was a group reservation so only one 4-person table was left — I had to wait a bit while they cleared it before I could sit down haha Unfortunately, all the other customers coming in after me were also solo, so it looked like they were seating pairs of strangers together at the 4-person tables

On one side they were also selling mini yakgwa (honey cookies), and it looked like they were running an event where you get one free if you leave a Google review!! Foreigners would probably love getting yakgwa haha (and of course, so would I...ha)

Menu line-up, tablet ordering and the review event
Besides sundae-guk, Pyeongando Sikdang also sells a bunch of other soups — boneless gukbap, spicy haejang-guk, yukgaejang, and beef head gukbap, so there was a huge variety!! But I only had eyes for the spicy haejang-guk haha

You can easily order using the tablet at the table! On the tablet there was also info about the Naver receipt review event — leave one Google review and you get yakgwa, leave two and you get a soju or beer, or a full plate of galbi mandu!! If I'd come at dinner, I could've knocked out two reviews with a friend and gotten a bottle of soju lol

What comes with the 14,000-won sundae-guk with intestines set
Since it was lunch~ we ordered the sundae-guk plus intestine set and the spicy haejang-guk set!!

After ordering, they laid out a full spread of side dishes first — kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) are essential with sundae-guk, and they also gave us chives, onion, and chili peppers, no detail missed!!

The first thing to come out was the sundae-guk plus intestine set! As expected, the sundae-guk arrived boiling hot, and even though it's a set, the sides were incredibly generous — how is this only ₩14,000??

You've got to add perilla seed powder to sundae-guk for it to really taste good, right?! Pile it on and it's absolutely delicious haha The perilla powder is always sitting on the table, so you can add as much as you want!!

Spicy haejang-guk set: two kinds of sundae plus boiled pork
Next came the spicy haejang-guk set! The meat in this set is different from the sundae-guk set — since there's no sundae in the haejang-guk itself, they gave us two kinds of sundae and boiled pork on the side instead!! I really love boiled pork, and this was way too generous?! I'm certain the owner's real intention was to make people order the spicy haejang-guk set and have a drink...ha
The spicy haejang-guk also came out boiling hot, and the contents inside were seriously hearty!! Not just meat, but mushrooms, bean sprouts, and even bok choy — plenty of vegetables, so it felt like a total bargain. Even the stone bowl felt like an extra-large one, honestly. And the taste was so good I almost blurted out 'excuse me, one soju please~!' but held it in by stuffing my mouth with food instead lol
The portions were so huge that my friend and I both couldn't finish and had to leave food behind ㅠㅠ My friend barely touched the sides, and I left most of the solid ingredients ㅠㅠ

We were eating so happily that the owner must have noticed and gave us a free canned drink on the house haha This means I have to come back to Sinchon again~~ Guess I have no choice but to come back for a shot of soju with the spicy haejang-guk!!
