Yeonnam-dong bakery light breads for a day on the move: Mandong Jegwa

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a popular bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, in the Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae area. With a Seongsu pop-up and a trip to Incheon on the same day, the heavy, oversized loaves stayed on the shelf and four lighter breads came home instead: chestnut loaf 4,900 won, yakbap bread 3,800 won, fig campagne 5,800 won and cappuccino bread 5,600 won, with staff-cut samples making the choice easier. The cappuccino bread was packed with an ice pack and still traveled fine until evening.

A bread-lover finally back at the mill — since I was in Yeonnam-dong anyway, I stopped by Mandong Jegwa. I've been here so many times already, I've tried a bit of everything!

Is there parking at Mandong Jegwa? Nearby paid lots

There's no parking space provided by the store itself, but there was signage at the entrance pointing to nearby public and paid parking lots. Worth checking if you're driving! Ever since I started driving myself, I've made it a habit to check parking availability before going anywhere.

Why a daytime visit beats evening at Mandong Jegwa

Mandong Jegwa is so popular that if you visit in the evening, most things are usually sold out. If you have time during the day, this is a place you have to go to. Such a welcome sight after so long!

The inside is on the smaller side, but wherever you turn, it's packed with bread! A place where all you see is bread, and that makes me happy.

The signature garlic baguette, saved for next time

Mandong Jegwa's super famous signature item is the garlic baguette (₩7,000). The glossy sheen on it... it's hard not to buy it just from the look. It's packed with sauce inside, so it's genuinely heavy when you pick it up! But that day I had to buy bread, hit a pop-up store in Seongsu, and then head all the way to Incheon, so I couldn't be carrying around anything too grand (lol). Sad, but I'll save it for next time, TT.

Everything looks so good, it's getting hard to decide!

Choosing with the samples staff cut at the counter

Since I obviously couldn't buy everything! I was going around and around the bread shelves, carefully picking, when a staff member cut off pieces of various breads inside and let me sample them one by one, haha. They tasted great so I grabbed them right away!

Honestly I also really love the cucumber baguette, but since it was a day for no grand breads, I skipped it with regret and just admired it with my eyes. Instead, since they offered to cut it up for me, I picked up the fig campagne!

The four breads bought at Mandong Jegwa, with prices

What I picked at Mandong Jegwa this day were four things: chestnut bread, yakbap bread, fig campagne, and cappuccino bread. Prices below.

  • Chestnut bread ₩4,900
  • Yakbap bread ₩3,800
  • Fig campagne ₩5,800
  • Cappuccino bread ₩5,600

All of Mandong Jegwa's breads are good of course, but personally I really love their chestnut bread, packed generously with chestnuts. The yakbap bread is chewy and loaded with nuts, and the fig campagne is bursting with figs for a healthy feel — a satisfying, filling set <3. This day's picks were delicious again, no regrets.

Mandong Jegwa cappuccino bread, packed with an ice pack

One of Mandong Jegwa's signatures, the cappuccino bread (₩5,600), is a no-brainer choice... it's the kind of bread that's perfect with a cup of americano, black tea, or green tea for a little tea time!

Since I had a full schedule that day, I wondered if it would be fine to buy it in the afternoon and carry it around until evening. They said it wouldn't be extremely hot that day so it should be fine, and it was just right when I got home at night and refrigerated it. They even packed it with an ice pack to keep it cool.
