Jejju Seogwipo New Town Branch is a premium lunch box shop specializing in sushi and rice bowls on Gimjeongmunhwa-ro in Seogwipo, Jeju, open daily from 10:30 am to 1 am. The writer picked up 12-piece fresh salmon sushi and a Jungmun lunch box for dinner with a child back at their accommodation, and was pleased with the thick, fresh salmon and a Jungmun lunch box packed with stir-fried octopus, bulgogi and fried food. For a filling late-night meal to eat at your accommodation, Jejju Seogwipo New Town Branch is a good choice.

Black pork BBQ annex in Jungmun with mango sorbet naengmyeon: Hayoung

Hayoung Black Pork BBQ (하영 흑돼지구이집) is a Jeju black pork barbecue restaurant near Cheonjeyeon Falls in Jungmun, Seogwipo. The writer came with a child, sat in the quiet, outdoor-style annex and ordered the small mixed black pork set (pork belly, neck and nape, 600g, ₩11,000 per 100g), followed by hand-made naengmyeon (cold noodles) topped with mango sorbet shaped like a Jeju harubang stone statue; the Haenam 2-year aged kimchi and the bracken doenjang (soybean paste) dip were the standouts. For families with kids, Hayoung Black Pork BBQ is an easy pick in Jungmun thanks to its calm annex seating and tender black pork neck.

Dongnae sushi lunch after appliance shopping: Set 4, Moshi Moshi

Moshi Moshi Sushi, Lotte Department Store Dongnae Branch, is a sushi restaurant in the 8th-floor food court of Lotte Department Store in Dongnae, Busan. Before moving house, the writer stopped by for lunch with a friend after an appliance consultation. They ordered Set 4 (18 pieces of sushi, soba and 9 fried shrimp), adding salmon sushi and a 5,000-won abalone sushi, and the thick, fresh fish and crispy fried shrimp left them stuffed. Moshi Moshi Sushi Dongnae is a sushi spot with reasonable prices and well-rounded sets, even for a department store food court.

Namyangsan Chinese restaurant: double-size set with my son at Rohwa

Rohwa is a newly opened Chinese restaurant on a side street in the Seoksan housing district of Dong-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam, near Namyangsan. The writer and their son ordered Rohwa's 2-person tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) set, about 33,000 won as remembered, upgraded to double-portion cream jjamppong (seafood noodle soup) and double-portion fried rice. It came with thick cream jjamppong, fluffy smoky fried rice, glutinous-rice tangsuyuk and free fried dumplings. Rohwa's double portions are so generous that anyone who isn't a big eater should order the regular size.

Danyang ssambap restaurant, black garlic stems at 4:30pm: Heukmaneul

Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is a ssambap (lettuce-wrap rice meal) restaurant in front of Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, serving black garlic boiled pork, spicy pork and squid ssambap. The writer walked into Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap almost at opening, right as break time ended at 4:30pm. They ordered black garlic boiled pork ssambap for 2 (₩19,000 per person) plus an extra black garlic squid (₩12,000), and the tender pork, chewy black garlic stems and sides like sikhye kimchi stood out. Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap was a good-value meal that breaks the stereotype of pricey, bland tourist-area restaurants.

Yeongju café open till 11pm for a late family dinner: Café289

Café289 is a brunch café on Guseong-ro in Hyucheon-dong, Yeongju, North Gyeongsang, near Yeongju Station, serving meals and drinks until 11pm. After traffic delayed their arrival and nearby restaurants had closed early, a family had dinner at Café289: a handmade Korean pork loin cutlet, pollock roe cream pasta and cordyceps duck pilaf. With soup, salad and garlic bread before the meal, then coffee or yogurt and carrot cake after, Café289 won them over on value, friendly service and kids' tableware.

Burger shop in Nampo, Busan: shopping lunch & pickle bar, Downtowner

Downtowner Busan Lotte Gwangbok is a handmade burger shop on B1 of Aqua Mall at Lotte Gwangbok in Nampo, Busan, and the only Busan branch of the well-known Seoul burger brand. During a shopping trip, the writer had the Double Downtowner Burger and Avocado Burger set for lunch and especially liked the thick, savory patty with no meaty smell, the fresh avocado and the unlimited drink refills. For a good-value handmade burger while shopping at Lotte Gwangbok, Downtowner Busan Lotte Gwangbok is a solid pick.

Pho restaurant in Myeongji, Busan, calmer than Sajik: Mibundang

Mibundang Myeongji Branch is a pho restaurant in Myeongji International New City, Gangseo-gu, Busan, a new branch of the Mibundang that people once queued for in Sajik. A parent and child ordered chadol pho (10,000 won), brisket pho (11,500 won) and a mixed side platter (8,500 won), ate their fill for about 30,000 won, and were struck by the rich broth and the free extra noodles and bean sprouts. Mibundang Myeongji Branch is more relaxed than the Sajik branch and a good pick for pho as a hangover cure or a hearty meal.

Milyang Chinese dinner, stomach-friendly mild jjajang: Milyang Dol

Milyang Dol Jjamppong (밀양돌짬뽕) is a Chinese restaurant near Yeongnamnu and Milyang City Hall in Milyang, Gyeongnam, specializing in nurungji (scorched rice) jjajang and jjamppong served on a 250°C stone plate. At dinner the writer ordered the mild nurungji stone jjajang set for 2 (₩37,000) and finished the dontang and chitang soups too; the starch-free black bean sauce was light on oil, and the chunjang flavor deepened as it reduced. Milyang Dol Jjamppong's stone jjajang is a meal even someone in their 40s who finds jjajangmyeon heavy at night can eat comfortably.

Danyang market bakery, frozen cream cheese garlic bread: Danppang

Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is a garlic bread bakery in Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, that makes its own black garlic for its breads. After a long wait, the writer took home the 4-flavor garlic bread set for ₩14,000; the cream cheese garlic bread, frozen and slightly thawed, ate like ice cream, and the baguette garlic bread reheated in an air fryer tasted as good as on day one. The Danppang Bakery set splits the family: the baguette garlic bread for anyone who dislikes sweets, the sweet potato custard garlic bread for anyone who loves them.
