Jongno bakery lunch snack for garlic bread: Munhwa Bakery

Working near Jongno, I get quite a kick out of hunting down hidden good eats at lunchtime or after work~ Today, I visited Munhwa Bakery, a place bread lovers should stop by at least once, tucked between Ikseon-dong and Jongno 3-ga!

When walking through the alleys of Jongno, there are bakeries that make you stop in your tracks for no reason, and Munhwa Bakery was one of them. I hear it is also part of Jongno’s classic bakery-hopping route! What especially impressed me was that, beyond making delicious bread, it donates leftover bread from the day to worthy causes. Being able to enjoy something tasty while sharing in a good cause made me feel even more drawn to it. :)

Munhwa Bakery is there to greet you as you walk between Ikseon-dong’s distinctive old alleys and the slightly bustling yet comforting atmosphere of Jongno 3-ga. Rather than being a flashy, attention-grabbing space, it felt naturally at home in the alley, which I liked even more!

Fun choices from meal breads to dessert breads

Once inside, the breads were neatly displayed! There was quite a variety, from simple breads you can enjoy as a meal to sweet dessert options, so it was fun to take my time looking around.

The promise I always make when I go to a bakery: “I’ll only buy one...” But in front of bread, that promise is always the first thing to crumble... haha. By the time I visited, lots of breads had already sold out! Definitely an officially popular bakery 👍

After looking at this and that, I asked the owner about the signature items and made my picks! After all, the owner’s recommendations are bound to be the most popular ones!!!

The breads were quite substantial, so this time I chose two I especially love: garlic bread and coffee bread. They even cut them up for me, and it was such a work of art~~~

Garlic bread that was crisp outside and moist inside

First, the garlic bread! The moment I opened the package, the savory aroma of garlic and butter came rushing out and really got my appetite going.

One bite in, it was chewy on the outside, while the inside was nicely soaked through with garlicky butter flavor.

Can you see it!! Garlic bread can sometimes be too sweet or so garlicky that you get tired of it after a few bites, but this one was just sweet enough, with the sharp garlic flavor still coming through, which I loved. The savory butter made it a truly great match for coffee, too.

Ah, so this is why people seek out garlic bread.

Personally, it was exactly the flavor I had been craving! I totally get why it is a signature bread!!

Coffee bread is also recommended for coffee lovers

The second pick was coffee bread. From the moment I opened the bag, its subtle mocha aroma was so appealing.

It had a fluffy, soft texture! Above all, the coffee aroma was subtle yet richer than I expected, so I think it would really suit anyone who loves coffee.

With bread like this, coffee + coffee bread = a can’t-miss combination ☕️ One sweet bread and one pleasantly bitter cup of coffee can make a short break feel pretty special! It was excellent as either a meal bread or a dessert bread!

Working in Jongno, searching for delicious places at lunch or after work has quietly become part of my everyday routine. Munhwa Bakery felt like more than just a place with good bread; it had a slightly neighborly, comforting feeling. The flavors themselves even felt like something your mom might make!

And once I learned that it shares a good purpose alongside its delicious bread, it felt even warmer. I think I will find myself thinking about the garlic bread now and then! It was packed with moisture and completely my kind of thing~~~ There are so many other breads, too, so I want to try more! The onion bagel, another signature item, and even the sold-out breads... I want to work my way through every one. :)
