While traveling in Gangneung, I visited a café that was perfect for taking a relaxed break over a cup of coffee! You simply can’t leave good coffee out of a Gangneung trip, can you? I tend to look up well-known cafés whenever I go to Gangneung, and this time I heard there was a roastery café that had been brewing coffee here for a long time, so I stopped by Coffee Dripper.
Coffee Dripper is a roastery café that has been making hand-drip coffee with beans roasted in-house in Gyodong, Gangneung, since 2012. Hearing that it had roasted beans and made coffee itself in one place for so long made me curious about the coffee! That day, we ordered an iced Americano and handmade patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red beans).

Dedicated parking that makes driving easy
Parking is something that quietly becomes a concern when you’re café-hopping in Gangneung. Coffee Dripper has its own dedicated lot, so it was convenient to visit by car. Looking for nearby parking just to pop into one café can be more of a hassle than you expect while traveling, so it was nice not to have to worry about that. The lot was fairly spacious too, so we could park comfortably before heading inside.

Outdoor seating and a spacious interior
Coffee Dripper also had outdoor seating. When the weather is cool like it has been lately, it’s nice to sit outside with coffee instead of indoors, isn’t it? On a lovely day, enjoying coffee slowly at an outdoor table would make for quite a nice atmosphere. The weather was pleasant when we visited too, so the outdoor area really caught my eye.

Once inside, I liked it again because the space was larger than I had expected. There were plenty of seats, and the overall atmosphere was clean and comfortable, so it seemed like you could sit for a long time without feeling cramped. It would be great for quickly dropping in for coffee during a Gangneung trip, but it also looked nice for sitting down to chat or rest at an easy pace.

A roastery café using beans roasted in-house
The most impressive thing about looking around Coffee Dripper was, of course, its long history with coffee. Since it has been making hand-drip coffee with in-house roasted beans in Gyodong, Gangneung, since 2012, I thought it would suit anyone who wants to properly enjoy coffee in Gangneung.
Gangneung has so many pretty and distinctive cafés, but if you’re looking for a roastery café that uses beans roasted in-house, this seems worth visiting at least once. Above all, the seating was spacious and comfortable, so it looked good for groups too. It had a relaxing atmosphere whether you wanted to drink coffee quietly alone or take a break while traveling with friends or family. With outdoor seating as well, you could enjoy coffee with a different feel on a beautiful day. The separate parking lot also felt like a significant plus for Gangneung travelers getting around by car.

Ordering iced Americano and handmade patbingsu
Today, we ordered an iced Americano and handmade patbingsu (for 2) ^_^

An aromatic iced Americano with no acidity
After we found a seat and waited a little, our iced Americano and handmade patbingsu arrived. I tried the iced Americano first. When I drink coffee, I usually prefer something aromatic and clean-drinking over beans with strong acidity, and the iced Americano that day was exactly my taste.
From the first sip, a gentle coffee aroma came through, and there was almost no acidity, making it easy to drink. It was refreshing as an iced coffee, while the aroma of the beans still came through nicely, which I really liked.

Maybe because it is a roastery café using beans roasted in-house, I got the sense that it puts a lot of care into the coffee itself. As I drank it, I found myself wondering about the hand-drip coffee too. If I visit again, I’d like to try different beans as hand-drip coffee next time, haha.

Handmade patbingsu with lightly sweet red beans and milk ice
The handmade patbingsu we ordered alongside it was really delicious too! These days there are lots of elaborate shaved-ice desserts topped with fruit and all sorts of ingredients, but sometimes I crave a patbingsu that stays true to the basics. Coffee Dripper’s patbingsu felt just like the classic version I had in mind.
First, I loved that the red beans were not too sweet. When the beans in patbingsu are overly sweet, you can get tired of it after just a few spoonfuls, but here they were pleasantly sweet while still letting the nutty flavor of the beans come through, so I kept eating. The ice was milk ice rather than plain water ice, which I liked even more. As the soft milk ice melted in my mouth, it added a mild flavor that went wonderfully with the beans.

There was also injeolmi powder—roasted soybean powder used with Korean rice cake—mixed in here and there, adding another nutty note. The sweetness of the beans, the softness of the milk ice, and the nuttiness of the injeolmi powder came together so much better than I expected. Spoonful by spoonful, quite a lot of the shaved ice had disappeared before I knew it.
Since it was not overly sweet, it was great alongside coffee. Taking a sip of iced Americano and then a bite of patbingsu gave it another dimension, and I was glad we ordered both together. Personally, I think this would especially suit people who prefer classic patbingsu like this over the unusual trendy versions. If you are looking for that quintessential patbingsu flavor, I think you’ll be satisfied, haha.

Taking a short break during a Gangneung trip
We took a little break from traveling that day over delicious iced Americano and patbingsu. After rushing around sightseeing spots, slowing down at a café made the trip feel that much more relaxing. In particular, the combination of the aromatic, low-acidity iced Americano and the patbingsu with lightly sweet red beans, soft milk ice, and injeolmi powder was really good.
If you are looking for a café where you can drink good coffee and rest comfortably during a Gangneung trip, Coffee Dripper seems like a nice place to stop by. We enjoyed being able to have coffee made with beans roasted in-house along with handmade patbingsu that stayed true to the basics. Most of all, the dedicated parking and spacious seating made it easy to visit, and the outdoor seating looked ideal for lingering on a nice day, so I would like to return on my next Gangneung trip.
