Yeongnang-dong Korean restaurant with 8am spicy pork: Deungdae Gotgan

In short

Deungdae Gotgan is a Korean restaurant on the second floor of a building facing Deungdae Beach in Yeongnang-dong, Sokcho, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an ocean view. About a 10-minute walk from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal, Deungdae Gotgan serves jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and nakji haejangguk (octopus hangover soup) from 8am, and the soup came out clear and clean like bokjiritang while the pork was not sweet, with a gentle smoky note. For anyone looking for breakfast in Sokcho without a car, Deungdae Gotgan is a solid pick.

I stayed one night near Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal and went to Deungdae Gotgan for breakfast. The wide-open sea view from Deungdae Beach was really beautiful. Since it opens at 8am, this is a great option if you're looking for a breakfast spot in Yeongnang-dong. Let me give you an honest rundown from the menu to the taste.

Where is Deungdae Gotgan? A 10-minute walk from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal

Entrance to the building right across from Deungdae Beach

Deungdae Gotgan sits right in front of Deungdae Beach, and walking from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal took a little over 10 minutes. It's also close to Yeonggeumjeong, so it's a convenient breakfast stop on a Sokcho trip.

Menu signage at the entrance of Deungdae Gotgan

The signature menu is jjaglaknakji, nakji haejangguk, and jeyuk bokkeum — Korean dishes that are hard to dislike. They also have pork cutlet, so it's a good spot to bring kids too.

Phrases posted on each stair step

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, so you go up a staircase, and there are little phrases posted on each step. They kind of stuck with me haha 🤣

Baby chairs set up at Deungdae Gotgan

Since there are a lot of families with kids, they've got plenty of baby chairs ready.

Second-floor dining room with a full window overlooking the Sokcho sea

What the second-floor ocean-view window seats are like

Climbing the stairs and turning the corner, the view is unreal,,? Is this really a restaurant and not a café? Wow, the Sokcho sea through the full window was so stunning.

There are about 6-7 tables, and since extra chairs and tables can be moved around easily, families can dine comfortably here.

A view that makes your jaw drop no matter how many times you see it — I took a seat by the window facing the ocean.

I ordered jeyuk bokkeum and nakji haejangguk. Jjaglaknakji requires a minimum order for 2 people.

A neatly arranged spread of basic side dishes

A neat, well put-together set of basic side dishes. Every single one was delicious. You could really tell the owner has a good hand for cooking 👍🏻

There's a separate self-serve bar, so you can easily grab more of any side dish you run low on.

A breakfast spread of jeyuk bokkeum and nakji haejangguk

How the nakji haejangguk tastes: clear and clean like bokjiritang

A hearty breakfast in Sokcho — if you're doing a walking trip, you've got to eat well, right 😉 I hadn't been drinking, but I wanted something hot in soup form, so I ordered the nakji haejangguk along with jeyuk bokkeum.

Octopus and vegetables inside the nakji haejangguk

The nakji haejangguk is a clear broth loaded with tofu, vegetables, and octopus. The broth tasted similar to bokjiritang — not sharp or strong, just clean. It was perfect for a hangover cure or a morning meal.

Jeyuk bokkeum: not sweet, with a gentle smoky note

Looking at this jeyuk bokkeum makes my mouth water again 🤤 What I loved most was that it wasn't overly sweet. When it's too sweet-and-salty it gets tiring fast and feels too intense for breakfast, but this had a bit of spicy kick and a subtle smoky flavor that made it really enjoyable. The meat was also tender with no gamey smell and mostly lean cuts, which I liked 🤍

Seasoned laver and dipping sauce served alongside

It comes with seasoned laver and a dipping sauce too, and that combo is a real treat haha

Breakfast eaten by a window overlooking the sea

I had a solid, hearty breakfast looking out at the Sokcho sea. If you're looking for a good breakfast spot near Deungdae Beach or Yeonggeumjeong, give this place a try. You'll be won over by the clean atmosphere and the owner's cooking skill.
