Yakitori and steak pot rice for lunch with pork cutlet side: Dongyang

In short

Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch is a Korean-Chinese-Japanese pot rice restaurant on the 2nd floor along the taxi stand street in Jungang-dong, Ansan. An Ansan-native couple ordered yakitori pot rice and steak pot rice for a weekday lunch, with oriental salad, Dongyang pork cutlet, and yurinji (crispy chicken with tangy sauce) as sides. With a self-serve side dish bar and even scorched rice on offer, it's a solid, filling lunch pick.

A new pot rice place on the 2nd floor in Jungang-dong

I went out to Jungang-dong for the first time in a while and grabbed lunch there. My husband and I are both Ansan natives, so I feel like we've been to pretty much every restaurant in Ansan — but that 2nd floor spot along the taxi stand street that I remember as Hongdae Gaemi has turned into Dongyang Sotbap.

We're a couple who loves pot rice, so today's lunch was decided: Dongyang Sotbap~ The interior has window seats good for eating solo, plus 2-person tables, 4-person tables, and group tables, all nicely laid out.

I vaguely remember customers at my husband's shop mentioning that Dongyang Sotbap opened in Jungang-dong and that it's good for solo dining too^^ Maybe because word has spread that it's a must-visit in Jungang-dong, Ansan, the tables were nearly full even a bit past lunch peak, and apparently there's a wait during peak lunch hours~

What's on the menu?

Since it's apparently Korea's first Korean-Chinese-Japanese pot rice restaurant, the menu was really diverse — from the new jikabi daechang (grilled skirt intestine) pot rice to a special eel rice bowl and abalone pot rice, along with reasonably priced pot rice options.

Best of all, the side menu was also super varied — yurinji, mandu with shrimp (menbosha), shrimp balls, sweet and sour pork (kkwabaerogi), pork cutlet, and more — plenty to enjoy generously~

They're certified by Water-Q as a clean and safe water business, using clean, safe water in the cooking process, which made me trust it even more👍👍~ The rice used in the pot rice is also Baekokhyang rice curated by a rice sommelier~ So the pot rice itself tastes great on its own, I think

Self-serve bar and scorched rice

The self-serve bar we love as a couple haha. There's a self-serve bar where you can get extra side dishes without worrying about it, plus scorched rice prepared too :)

For sides we ordered oriental salad, pork cutlet, and yurinji — the prices weren't expensive, so they were great value as sides to a main dish :)

Three side dishes

Oriental Salad, ₩5,900 — the vegetables were quite fresh~ Sometimes salad leaves are old even at other places, but Dongyang Sotbap's salad was totally fresh~ Plus the sauce was generously drizzled on

Dongyang Pork Cutlet, ₩5,900 — my husband loves pork cutlet so much, it's his favorite side dish, and he insisted we order it no matter what >_< haha. It was thicker than expected and pretty good~ But by the end we were seriously stuffed hahaha

Yurinji, ₩6,900 — I normally love yurinji so I ordered it since it was on the side menu. The mild chicken was coated in a tangy-sweet-spicy sauce that kept me reaching for more~ They also seem to sell beer, so this is totally a recommended drinking snack!

Here come the mains!!

Main course spread featuring yakitori pot rice

My husband's order, Yakitori Pot Rice, ₩12,900 — pot rice with whole grilled boneless chicken thigh coated in a special sauce~ The chicken thigh was really tender👍

The yakitori pot rice comes with instructions to set the meat topping aside, mix the ingredients into the pot rice, then eat it with the topping — so we cut it up like this and this, poured it back in, and shook it all together haha

My husband ate it topped with salted squid — he said this combo was salty with great umami and pretty great👍👍

I'm a meat person haha, so the Steak Pot Rice I ordered cost ₩15,900~ It comes piled generously with steak, and you just mix it well with the egg!

Shaking together the golden scorched rice stuck to the pot, the steak, egg, and green onion gave double the savory flavor — the nuttiness of the meat plus the crunchy nuttiness of the scorched rice🥰🥰

To sum up

A genuinely great Korean pot rice restaurant, confirmed!! If you're looking for a must-visit spot in Jungang-dong, Ansan, I recommend this as a hearty lunch option :)
