Magok hot pot with sauce-on-the-side sweet and sour pork: J's Pot

In short

J's Pot Magok Branch is a personal-pot hot pot restaurant on B2 of COEX Magok Tower A in Gangseo, Seoul, near Magongnaru. Three generations — grandmother, parents and child — shared three lunch beef brisket hot pot sets at 17,500 won each plus sweet and sour pork ordered with the sauce on the side, and because each person picked their own broth, from mala to the plain one, nobody had to compromise. Portions at J's Pot Magok are not huge, so big eaters should add extra noodles.

Hi, this is Piki Daddy. My mother-in-law came up to Seoul for the weekend and said, "I'm kind of craving shabu-shabu today." While looking for somewhere to get shabu-shabu or hot pot in Magok, I found J's Pot Magok Branch, which kept popping up as a Magongnaru favorite. My son Hamin came too — he's past the age of reaching for hot pots, so I could bring him without too much worry haha. And once I got there, I could see exactly why this place is so popular.

How to find J's Pot Magok Branch, and where to park

J's Pot Magok Branch is on B2 of COEX Magok's Tower A. Park in the COEX Magok underground lot and take the Tower A elevator down — it's right there. Parking is free for 2 hours, which made it easy to have a relaxed meal with my mother-in-law.

What does the inside of J's Pot Magok look like?

The moment we walked in, my mother-in-law said, "This looks upscale," impressed by the spacious, striking interior. Framed artwork lines the wood-toned walls, and the warm lighting makes it a great spot for a family meal.

Personal pots that make a three-generation meal easy

And here's this place's biggest strength: every seat has its own personal induction burner.

Instead of everyone sharing one pot, each person picks their own broth for their own pot, so it's totally fine to seat someone who loves spicy food next to someone who can't handle it at all. That really came in handy with three generations at the table.

Here's what we ordered.

  • Lunch beef brisket hot pot × 3 (₩17,500 each) — choice of broth + assorted vegetables + 100g beef brisket + rice + 2 fish balls
  • Sweet and sour pork (sauce on the side)

The lunch menu can only be ordered daily between 11:00 and 15:00. You can choose your broth from mala, tomato, beef, tom yum, or kimchi — I went with mala, while my mother-in-law and wife both chose the mild broth. Hamin just ate from my wife's and mother-in-law's pots haha.

What's on the self-serve sauce bar?

Half the fun of hot pot is making your own sauce, right? The sauce bar has peanut sauce, soy sauce, black vinegar, lao gan ma chili crisp, minced garlic, chopped scallions, cilantro, crushed peanuts, and more all lined up.

If you're not sure how to combine things, there's a "Sauce Tip" guide posted on the wall.

All four of us landed on the same conclusion that day: the peanut sauce base is the best.

Just top peanut sauce with minced garlic, scallions, crushed peanuts, and a bit of lao gan ma and you're done. It's nutty without being heavy, and it makes whatever you dip in it — meat or vegetables — taste great.

Tasting notes: mala broth vs the plain broth

① Lunch beef brisket hot pot (₩17,500) — the broth comes out quickly and heats up fast, so it's bubbling in no time.

The assorted vegetables come with a classic shabu-shabu lineup — napa cabbage, bok choy, mushrooms, and tofu.

The beef brisket is sliced thin, so it cooks the moment it hits the broth.

My mala broth had a numbing kick with a big savory finish. It's not painfully spicy — just right for someone who genuinely likes mala. Dip a slice of brisket in the mala broth, then in peanut sauce, and honestly, it's a real treat.

The mild broth my mother-in-law and wife had was studded with jujubes and had a warm, savory flavor. It wasn't spicy at all, so Hamin was able to happily fish out vegetables and meat from it.

At the end, adding rice to the broth for a light finish makes for a satisfying close. Honestly, the one downside is the portion size — the lunch set is a great deal, but the amount isn't super generous. If you're a big eater, I'd recommend adding extra meat or noodles.

Can you order the sweet and sour pork with sauce on the side?

We ordered it as a side, and you can ask for the sauce on the side when ordering.

Thanks to that, it stayed crispy right to the end. The batter was crunchy and the meat was juicy, making it perfect for popping a piece between bites of hot pot. Honestly, this sweet and sour pork was Hamin's favorite dish of the whole meal haha.
