I was craving Chinese food for lunch today, so I visited Surabanjeom Gaya Branch. It's in an easy-to-find spot, so I found it quickly.

The glass at the entrance was so clean it put me in a great mood ✨ You could immediately tell they take good care of the place.

What is Surabanjeom Gaya Branch like at lunchtime?

Surabanjeom Gaya Branch was bustling at lunchtime. I took these photos once some of the crowd had cleared out. The interior is so clean! And the kitchen is open, which made me trust the place even more.

What we ordered: Chinese cold noodles, jjamjjamyeon and tangsuyuk for one

We wanted something a bit more special than the usual today, so we ordered Chinese-style cold noodles, jjamjjamyeon (half jjajangmyeon, half jjamppong), and one serving of tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). There were a lot of tangsuyuk set menus too — good for families or bigger groups. Chinese restaurants have so many menu items that it's hard to decide, so having varied set menus makes choosing a bit easier.

Tangsuyuk for one: how thick is the pork?

Honestly I wasn't planning to eat tangsuyuk today, we just ordered it since we were doing a set anyway. But the meat in it was so generous!!!

Both photos ended up out of focus, haha. Anyway, unlike any tangsuyuk I've had before, this had a lot of meaty flavor and the pieces were plump and satisfying to chew. The texture of the batter with the meat was great, and above all it felt like the meat portion was solid, which I loved. Tangsuyuk really does taste better when the meat is generous, haha.

Jjamjjamyeon: the smoky jjamppong broth

I'm usually a jjajangmyeon person, but my boyfriend kept begging for jjamjjamyeon (half jjajangmyeon, half jjamppong), so we ordered it! And if we hadn't, it would've been a huge mistake. The jjamppong broth had insane smoky wok flavor!!!! The jjamppong flavor is out of this world, seriously ㅠㅠㅠ Everyone should try it.

Chinese cold noodles with generous peanut sauce

My boyfriend has been obsessed with Chinese-style cold noodles lately.. and they're perfect for hot summer days~ This bowl looked so pretty.

It's a dish where you eat the cool broth, seafood, and noodles all together, so it felt totally different from jjajangmyeon or jjamppong. Since we ordered a bunch of dishes to share, it was great for switching up our palate between bites! And they gave us the peanut sauce generously too. Personally I think it would've tasted even better if it were a bit colder!! Still, we enjoyed it a lot.

The self-serve bar was also kept very clean. Rice refills are free too, so be sure to mix some rice into your jjamppong 😝

Why we ordered a second serving of tangsuyuk

And.. the tangsuyuk was so good we ended up ordering more, hahahaha. The tangsuyuk doesn't taste greasy and is light, but the meat is still so chunky — truly the best!!

Ending with one last photo of the chunky tangsuyuk ~! I never expected that the mini tangsuyuk we ordered as a taste-test would end up needing a second round.

If you're craving good Chinese food around Gaegeum-Gaya, I highly recommend Surabanjeom Gaya Branch 👏🏻 When you go out for Chinese food, sometimes you want jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all at once — ordering a set makes choosing easier and lets you enjoy a variety together. Especially when you're visiting with family or a bigger group, everyone might want something different, so using the set menus well is a great way to put together the meal. I highly recommend the jjamjjamyeon set! Next time we're going to order plenty of tangsuyuk, hehe.
