Yongsan tteokbokki served ready-made, not instant: Hyeonseonine set

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a bunsik (Korean street food) restaurant on Hangang-daero 39-gil in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, a good walk from Sinyongsan Station whenever you're craving tteokbokki. Today's blog is all about Hyeonseonine! As a Yongsan local, I have a tteokbokki place I eat at constantly — it's Hyeonseonine~!!!!

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch hours and last order

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is open daily 11:00–24:00, with last order at 22:40. It's open really late, so I used to order delivery from here often — and now, kind of by accident, it's basically right by my house... so I end up walking over whenever I want tteokbokki lol. If you're ever near Yongsan, it's a good easy place to stop by!!!

Hyeonseonine has become a real institution... I didn't realize it, but it turns out this place is quite famous (I never noticed when I only ordered delivery). Being the Yongsan main branch, quite a few people came in even on a weekday — solo diners, friends, and families all around.

It's also a good spot to pop into if you're running errands near Yongsan Station — the vibe is more about eating a quick, simple meal than lingering, so it worked well as a stop in the middle of my day.

Is there a wait? Weekday 2pm vs. weekends at Hyeonseonine

I visited Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch around 2pm for lunch and thankfully there was no wait! Weekends do get a decent wait, so using Catch Table is probably a good idea!

There's pickled radish and fried batter powder at the self-serve bar, plus soy sauce and salt — but you have to take the soy sauce and salt from the bar yourself and bring them to your table!!!!

Instant tteokbokki or ready-made tteokbokki: which to order

Hyeonseonine has both instant tteokbokki and regular tteokbokki. I've tried both, and regular tteokbokki is more my style!

There are really a lot of staff working inside. They always wear hats and masks, so it seems like a place that takes hygiene seriously.

What comes in the Hyeonseoni set for two

The Hyeonseoni set!!!!! My favorite... actually, it was extra delicious that day for some reason, I hadn't had tteokbokki in a while but haha it was so good my husband and I just devoured it.

Eating it, I started to understand why this place has been talked about in the Yongsan area for so long. There are so many kinds of tteokbokki these days, a lot of them either aggressively spicy or overly sweet, but Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki has a comfortably familiar flavor you keep reaching for, easy to eat without feeling overwhelmed.

I especially liked how the flavor deepens as you eat — the sauce clings to the rice cakes more the further in you get, more so than in the first bite or two. Bunsik is always more fun when you order a few dishes together and dip them in the tteokbokki sauce, and I really felt like I was properly having bunsik for the first time in a while haha

How spicy is mild? A spice-wimp husband's verdict

My husband can't handle spice haha, and even the mild version felt kind of spicy to him...? But it was delicious.

The fritters, need I say more.... I already want to eat Hyeonseonine again...

Would we go back to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?

Yongsan's location itself is pretty accessible, so it seemed like a good place to stop by if you have errands nearby or want a simple meal with a friend. The atmosphere isn't the overly styled kind you see at trendy restaurants these days — it has a friendly feel where you can walk in comfortably, eat a plate of tteokbokki, and head out. Personally, I think that vibe suited me even more.

It's not an expensive menu either, and it works well whether you're eating alone or ordering a few dishes to share with someone, so I think I'll come back here whenever I'm craving bunsik in Yongsan. It's the kind of place that comes to mind naturally on days I want something bold and flavorful, or when I'm thinking of familiar bunsik dishes like tteokbokki and fritters.

Personally, I'd say don't go in with sky-high expectations just because it's famous — go with the mindset of grabbing a light meal at a bunsik place that's been loved in Yongsan for a long time, and I think you'll enjoy it even more :)
