While planning my Sokcho trip I did a ton of restaurant research, and the keyword that kept coming up over and over was Sokcho jangkalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodle soup). There are so many famous spots that I agonized over it, but after reading a bunch of reviews I ended up booking a reservation at Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu.

Short version: I was really satisfied. Beyond the gorgeous seafood presentation, one spoonful of the broth and — wow... I instantly understood why people recommend this place. Especially that final moment when you add the noodles in — even thinking about it now makes me want to eat it again...

Sign and exterior of Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu

The sign was so eye-catching you could spot it from far away. This place comes up every time you search for jangkalguksu restaurants in Sokcho, so I went in with high expectations — and seeing customers keep streaming in the moment I arrived only raised them further.

The restaurant's own parking lot

Parking was such a relief — the restaurant has its own dedicated lot! It fits roughly 7–8 cars, so driving there wasn't stressful at all. Being able to skip the usual parking headache at a popular restaurant is a pretty big plus.

Spacious, clean tables inside the restaurant

Is it okay to bring kids or a dog?

Once inside, the space was bigger and cleaner than I expected. The tables had generous spacing, which made dining comfortable, and overall it felt well maintained.

What impressed me most was the thoughtfulness toward families. Dogs are welcome, and they even offer a dedicated pet stroller for rent. On top of that, they have a kids' pork cutlet and a nutritious porridge on the menu, so it seemed like a great spot to visit with children too. It would also work well as a stop on a family trip or a trip with your parents.

Book on Naver Reservation and skip the wait

We booked ahead through Naver Reservation, and when we sat down the table for two was already set up, so we could start eating right away. On a trip, time is precious and waiting in line is a drag, so it was great to skip all that thanks to the reservation. I'd recommend booking ahead if you're going on a weekend or during peak season!

And here's today's star, finally: the wonkiboyang haemul poktan shabu jangkalguksu (energy-boosting seafood-bomb shabu jangkalguksu) for two (₩50,000).

Seafood shabu jangkalguksu for two arranged like a flower

I gasped the moment I saw it. Octopus, abalone, scallops, clams, blue crab, shrimp, beef and vegetables arranged like flower petals — the visual was truly overwhelming. I immediately understood why the name has

the word "flower" (kkot) in it. If you're someone who loves taking photos, you'll grab your camera without even thinking.

Can you see how alive and fresh that abalone still is..? The freshness was genuinely top-notch.

Once the broth starts to simmer, they add the clams and snow crab first. As the clams start opening one by one and the crab aroma rises up, you can already tell the broth is going to be good. The clams were well cleaned of grit too, so there was no discomfort eating them, and the freshness was satisfying throughout.

The flavor of the sanghwang mushroom and hutgae broth

Once the broth really got going, the aroma itself changed. It turns out this broth is no ordinary broth.

Simmered by hand every morning for three hours with sanghwang mushroom and hutgae (Japanese raisin tree) extract.

That's how they described it. It was spicy yet refreshing, with a deep savoriness that kept building. It wasn't a jangkalguksu that's just aggressively spicy — it was a broth that made you keep going back for another spoonful. If you're on the hunt for a great Sokcho jangkalguksu spot, this broth will definitely satisfy you.

The octopus was bouncy and firm, the abalone chewy and savory, and the scallops soft and sweet. The seafood was so good on its own that it tasted great even without extra seasoning. The seafood also enriched the broth further, so it seemed to get deeper in flavor the more we ate.

The house-made noodles at the end are the highlight

And then the grand finale: they add fresh house-made noodles. These noodles are special too — apparently they're made with the writer's grandmother's own dough recipe, kneaded with sanghwang mushroom and potato starch, then aged. Maybe that's why they stayed chewy all the way to the last bite without going mushy.

Fresh house-made noodles added to the pot

And this is where things really get good. As the noodles soak up the broth infused with seafood and vegetables, the soup gets thicker and thicker... it was insane at that point. Honestly, I enjoyed the noodle course even more than the beginning. I scooped up a big bite of noodles with that thick broth and couldn't put my spoon down. This was the most memorable moment of the whole meal.

If you're looking for a proper meal on your Sokcho trip, I really want to recommend this place.

Gorgeous seafood presentation, medicinal-tasting broth, noodles that stay chewy to the end, and that final noodle course.

Having tried it myself, I get why it's famous as a Sokcho jangkalguksu spot. I'm 100% planning to come back next time I'm in Sokcho. If you're deciding on a Sokcho jangkalguksu restaurant, I highly recommend Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu.
