Today I finally got my hair done! My original hair had no layers, just plain long hair, and I'd been somehow managing with a Dyson roller, but it would all fall out after just a little while, so I came in for a perm.
Where Heeol Hair Gangnam Flagship Store is and what the salon feels like
Heeol Hair, this hair salon near Gangnam Station, is on the 3rd floor of the building! Take the elevator up and Heeol Hair is the only place on the whole floor, so it's super easy to find. The salon has warm wood tones and floor-to-ceiling windows, so photos come out great. Even the bathroom was decorated this cutely.
Before starting, I had a consultation with designer Hyunju about what style to go for. I was in such a rush that day that I walked really fast and showed up drenched in sweat, so she brought over a fan and ice water and waited until I cooled down…! Angel teacher 😇
Why she chose a high-layered perm over a build perm
In the consultation at Heeol Hair, they look at your head shape and hair condition and recommend what style would suit you. I originally brought a photo for a build perm, but the designer recommended a high-layered perm instead, so I changed course!
My hair is round on the sides and flat at the back of my head, so we decided to add layers to bring out volume. Using the Dyson every day had really damaged my hair, so I decided to get a clinic treatment done at the same time. It had been a while since I'd had anything done to my hair, so I was really looking forward to it.
Cutting in 1cm steps and three rounds of heat treatment
First my hair was washed (and since I was still overheated, she used a cooling shampoo and made the water temperature cold too…🥹), then she cut it, adjusting in 1cm increments to figure out exactly how much to cut so the perm would come out at the length I wanted.
After heat treatment, she cut my hair once more. This was my first time getting this kind of layered perm, so I was really worried the curls wouldn't come out right, but she kept reassuring me — trust her, don't worry! Even just from the cut alone it already looked good on me, haha, she gave me so much confidence.
Even after two rounds of heat treatment, my hair was so stubborn that we did one more round at the end. When I told her I have hair that doesn't take perms well, she checked in on it more carefully throughout. While I waited for the heat treatment, she brought me snacks and a drink. I'd had coffee that morning so I wanted something without caffeine, and since they had peppermint tea, I went with it iced.
While washing my hair, she also did the clinic treatment, then cut it once more. She thinned out a lot of the volume, and it definitely felt lighter!
Finally, she set it with a flat iron and did the neutralizing step, and the hair was complete. Right up to the end she checked whether my bangs were too long. I was especially grateful that she taught me an easy way to style it at home.
How the high-layered perm turned out and how to dry it at home
You just dry your hair by brushing it all forward, and once the scalp is dry, brush it back — and it comes out exactly like this shape. She also curled the bangs separately, so if I roll them with a roller at home for a bit and then brush them back, the curl sets naturally.
Seeing the finished hair, I understood why she recommended a high-layered perm! The overall volume came back, my hair looks so much lighter, and the naturally falling curls gave it a more feminine vibe too. But what I liked most was that it's not hard to style at all. I was worried since it had been a while since my last perm, but in the end I was so satisfied and went home in a great mood! It was so hot doing the Dyson routine in summer, and to think all I have to do now is just dry it simply and this hair happens!! I should've done this ages ago.
I tried drying it at home the way she taught me, and styling was so simple that I think I can style it nicely even on busy mornings without any hassle. Thank you so much to designer Hyunju at Heeol Hair for taking such careful care of me for a full 4 hours 🥰
