Friday after-work bunsik in Yongsan: half-organ sundae, Hyeonseonine

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is a bunsik (Korean street food) restaurant a 5–7 minute walk from Yongsan Station in Seoul. On a Friday after work, the writer and a coworker ordered the Hyeonseon Combo Set (26,000 won) in the standard spice level and received five kinds of fritters, four mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), sundae (blood sausage) served half plain and half with organ meat, and one serving of odeng (fish cake). Turnover at Hyeonseonine is fast so the wait is short, and dipping the self-serve fritter flakes into the tteokbokki broth was the highlight of the meal.

First photo from the visit to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

On a stressful Friday.... ✨ I visited Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch with a coworker I really like!

How to walk to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch from Yongsan Station

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is about a 5–7 minute walk from Yongsan Station. We walked over, and you can spot Hyeonseonine's chimney (?) from far away, so it's easy to find without getting lost!

Is there a wait right after work on a Friday?

We went right after work... and as expected for a Yongsan hotspot, it was already bustling haha. I wondered if there'd be a wait, but thankfully none! By the time we finished eating and left, there was 1 group waiting. But turnover is fast, so the wait probably won't be too long — just for reference haha.

Hyeonseonine menu and set prices

We had the Hyeonseon Combo Set (₩26,000). (If you order the instant tteokbokki, you can also get fried rice afterward!) Besides that, the main set menus seem to be the Hyeonseon Beer Set (₩32,000) and the Hyeonseon Set (₩23,000) — the people around our table were mostly ordering the beer set.

Inside Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch and its self-serve bar

The ceilings are high, and there are more seats than I expected!

Since they run instant tteokbokki, there's an induction stove at every table! (Of course we ate the combo set haha.) And I pay attention to how clean the spoons and chopsticks are — no foreign bits, well managed, very satisfying 💕

After ordering at the kiosk, grab a plate, danmuji (pickled radish), soy sauce, and salt from the self-serve bar next to it!

I also grabbed a ladle to scoop out my own odeng separately! You only need to take one soy sauce and one salt haha — one of each was plenty 💛

What comes in the 26,000 won Hyeonseon Combo Set

The great thing about bunsik places? The food comes out so fast lol. I was starving, so it came out crazy quick and I snapped a photo real fast and dug in lol🤣🤣

They kindly asked whether we eat organ meat with our sundae, and we said yes! So they gave us a plate that was genuinely half sundae, half organ meat >< (such a nice touch!!) And why is the odeng so plump lol? It was really substantial! The broth was piping hot too, which made me a little tempted to drink lol (for reference, Hyeonseonine also sells alcohol...^^) And if you look at the bottom of the odeng, there's rice cake in there too — kind of like a water rice cake texture haha.

Basically you get one of every kind of fritter, 4 mini gimbap, sundae with organ meat, and odeng! On top of that the tteokbokki portion is really generous haha. You can pick from three spice levels — mild, medium, spicy → we picked medium!

The five fritters and the squid fritter

The fritters were genuinely crispy, and it seemed like they use clean oil! Can you see how light-colored the frying is... And I'm a real squid-fritter lover, you know? The squid inside these was seriously big and plump — I was moved..ㅠ

How spicy is the standard tteokbokki level?

The description for the medium level says it's just a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun... hmm, I'd actually say it's less spicy than Shin Ramyun lol. Even I — someone who's terrible with spice — could eat the medium level pretty spiced up and comfortable, so I think it's worth trying haha. The rice cake is wheat-based, but it was nice and chewy, satisfying texture!

And even though the mini gimbap looks small, look at the cross-section — packed full!

Fritter flakes from the self-serve bar dipped in tteokbokki broth

And at the self-serve bar, if you grab some fritter flakes and mix them into the tteokbokki, it's genuinely so good! Letting them soak up the tteokbokki broth until moist is such a delicacy haha.
