Weekend couple's table at a Gwacheon seaweed soup restaurant: Haenon

In short

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch (해논미역 과천직영점) is a seaweed soup restaurant on a back street in Munwon-dong, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. For weekend lunch a couple ordered one sea urchin roe seaweed soup and one scallop-abalone seaweed soup, each served as a full set with tot rice (seaweed fusiforme rice), fried eggplant, flounder gangjeong (sweet crispy fish) and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry); the portions were so large that the leftover soup went home in a 1,000 won container. Rich broth with no fishy smell and tasty banchan made the meal at Haenon Miyeok feel like a birthday spread.

I've been craving good seaweed soup lately, so I went looking and found a Gwacheon seaweed soup spot!! Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch. Let's go!!!

Where is Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch? Hours and reservations

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch sits on a back street in Munwon-dong, at 67 Araetbaerangi-ro, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, 1st floor. Open daily 11:00–21:00, with a break time on weekdays from 15:00–17:00!

It gets busy on weekends, so I'd recommend booking ahead!! You can reserve easily through Naver Reservations, so skip the weekend wait and book first!!

Storefront and parking at Haenon Miyeok

Haenon's storefront under a high, blue autumn sky!! Autumn is the season for building up your strength, so this was my slightly illogical but determined mission to eat well before winter.

🅿️ You can park in the front yard of the building!

Being the weekend, there were lots of families with kids! Seaweed soup is easy for little ones to eat, making it a perfect dining spot for families out visiting the grand park or science museum.

What is the interior and seating like at Haenon Miyeok?

Walk in and you see a wall lined with all the seaweed soup menu options!!! True to being a seaweed soup specialist, there's a wide variety of types.

The place was clean and pleasant, and the tables were spaced comfortably far apart so it never felt noisy! The restroom is inside the restaurant too, which was great!! Everything about the facilities felt polished and modern, so I felt right at ease!!

How to order: table order at Haenon Miyeok

There were so many kinds of good-for-you seaweed soup on the menu that I wanted to try every single one!

So what did we order?! I got sea urchin roe seaweed soup, my husband got scallop-abalone seaweed soup.

Guess we'll have to come back and try the others haha. I also liked that the utensils were individually wrapped for hygiene!

What banchan comes with the seaweed soup set?

The side dishes were served neatly and looked delicious, with only the good stuff carefully picked out!!! Fried eggplant, scallop kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and mustard chicken breast — these aren't your usual banchan, which made it even more special!! And there was also a salad and flounder gangjeong!! The flounder gangjeong was a real standout!!! It really sharpened the appetite.

And it doesn't stop there! Japchae too!!

Everything except the flounder gangjeong can be refilled at the self-serve bar!

Every single banchan was delicious, and with japchae alongside the seaweed soup it felt just like a birthday spread haha. We even promised to come back here for an actual birthday!

Scallop-abalone seaweed soup: two abalones and tot rice

Scallop-abalone seaweed soup

A generous pot of seaweed soup comes out in an earthenware bowl, packed with scallops and a whopping two whole abalones!!!

The broth was clean, nutty, and rich~!!! The seaweed itself was tender rather than tough, so it slid right down!!

A deep, rich bowl of seaweed soup that's basically its own health tonic! Exactly my style.

And the rice served alongside is tot rice (seaweed fusiforme rice), which pairs perfectly with the soup!! Both the side dish plates and rice bowl were so elegant that I felt genuinely pampered — a real Gwacheon seaweed soup gem, Haenon Miyeok.

Sea urchin roe seaweed soup: half broth, half sea urchin

The sea urchin roe is loaded in generously!! Half broth, half sea urchin.

With the sea urchin in there, it takes on a creamy quality, doubling the softness and nuttiness, which let me savor the richness and depth of the seaweed soup even more!!!

Spoonful of sea urchin roe seaweed soup broth

Zero fishy smell, yet so nutty, clean, and rich — I'm already craving it again haha.

The texture of the sea urchin was top notch too!! The seaweed was soft and delicious, and I thought it'd be great to eat this every day during postpartum recovery someday haha.

Taking leftover seaweed soup home in a 1,000 won container

The portions were huge, so we packed the leftovers! The takeout container is just ₩1,000!

You can also bring your own container, so I'll remember to bring one next time! The portions are so generous that we left full and satisfied — highly recommend this Gwacheon seaweed soup restaurant, Haenon Miyeok!
