Gyeongju mochi shop, first in Saturday's line but no fig: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju known for fruit mochi and gotgam sando (dried persimmon sandwich cookies). Arriving at 10:40am for the 11am Saturday opening made me first in line, but the fig yogurt mochi still needed 20 more minutes, so I gave up on it and bought peach, mango, pineapple and gold kiwi instead. Pineapple had such a thin mochi skin that the fruit burst out, while mango's thicker skin gave the better chew.

A weekend visit to Tareudang, a dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil famous for fruit mochi.

What time to arrive at Tareudang on a weekend
Tareudang opens at 11am, and when I arrived at 10:40am on a Saturday, we were first in line. We did an opening run on Saturday!
Since it opens at 11, we got there at 10:40 and we were first!!!!!!!!!! But the line gets really long starting about 10 minutes before opening, so to be safe I think it's better to arrive 20 minutes early!!

Hours are 11am to 7pm, but with so many people on Hwangnidang-gil on weekends, it seems they sometimes close early too!

Tareudang's Hwangnam mochi flavors and tart menu
Tareudang's Hwangnam mochi came in 7 flavors: dried persimmon yogurt (low sugar), raw chocolate, peach yogurt (low sugar), mango yogurt (low sugar), fig yogurt (low sugar), pineapple, and gold kiwi. Fruit mochi seems to be trending lately, and I really wanted to try it — and it's nice that there's a place like this on Hwangnidang-gil, where you can pick one up while traveling and it just puts you in a good mood, right?
- Dried persimmon yogurt (low sugar)
- Raw chocolate
- Peach yogurt (low sugar)
- Mango yogurt (low sugar)
- Fig yogurt (low sugar)
- Pineapple
- Gold kiwi
That's the lineup of Hwangnam mochi flavors they had.

I figured a place famous for Hwangnam mochi and fruit mochi would only sell that, but they actually had a bunch of other desserts too!
- Tart set
- Egg tart (plain/mango)
- Brûlée cheesecake tart
- Cheesecake tart (mango)

Gotgam sando at Tareudang also comes as a 6-piece set
The dried persimmon sando (sandwich cookies) at Tareudang, this dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil, also seemed really popular — there were 6 flavors: red bean butter fig, matcha pistachio, injeolmi (rice cake) red bean, black sesame walnut, strawberry, and ube coconut, and you can buy them as a 6-piece set!

First in line at Tareudang, but the fig yogurt mochi wasn't ready
The fig yogurt mochi I wanted most at Tareudang wasn't ready yet at opening time and they said I'd need to wait another 20 minutes. So decide what to buy while you wait, buy fast, leave a receipt review, and grab your cooler bag.
The disappointing part! I really wanted the fig,,,, but it wasn't ready yet and needed about 20 more minutes to wait, and if I waited I'd have to line up all over again, so I just couldn't buy it. I did the opening run specifically to try what I wanted to eat, so it was a little disappointing,,, ? But I bought other flavors instead hahahahahaha

Made it home safely with everything intact. The weather's gotten cooler, but since I bought it early in the morning, the ice had all melted by the time I got home.

The packaging is so pretty! Even though I bought it myself, it felt like receiving a gift — it would also make a great present!

We bought these 4! Peach / mango / pineapple / gold kiwi — those 4!

Pineapple mochi was the biggest of the four
Tareudang's pineapple mochi was the biggest of the four I bought this time, and it had so much fruit inside it was practically bursting out of the rice cake. The first one I tried — since the bag was yellow, I thought it was mango, but it turned out to be pineapple, a twist! Now that it's open, let's taste it!
The outside was wrapped in mochi, and there was so much fruit inside that it burst out lol lol. More fruit is a good thing!!!

I cut it into 8 pieces for easy eating. The mochi was super chewy, with something like cream and red bean inside, and the pineapple was so sweet it was delicious. With fruit mochi, it seems the fruit itself accounts for 70-80% of the taste — use good fruit, and it can't help but be delicious!!

Mango yogurt mochi, frozen and then thawed
Tareudang's mango yogurt mochi was still delicious even after I froze it and thawed it out, since I figured I couldn't finish it all at once. Second up is mango — the one I was most excited about!
I figured I couldn't eat it all at once so I froze it and thawed it later, and it was still really really good!

The pineapple's mochi skin (?) was super thin, but the mango's was thicker than the pineapple's, so the chewing texture was better. The mango was also well-ripened and very sweet, which went well with everything.

Eating it cold, slightly thawed, seemed even more delicious! The mango mochi was labeled low sugar, which might be why it tasted even better!!!
Hwangnidang-gil is a must-visit when traveling to Gyeongju, and Tareudang is a fruit mochi shop worth checking out at least once. Fruit mochi seems to be trending these days, so it's a dessert worth trying at least once!
