Gondre-bap set for family lunch in Jungnang, Seoul: Sanchaega
In short
Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch is a Korean set-menu restaurant near Meokgol Station in Jungnang, Seoul. For a weekend lunch with parents and kids, the writer ordered the gondre-bap (gondre herb rice) special, enjoying a full spread of namul side dishes, grilled deodeok and hwangtae, grilled fish, and finishing with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). The banchan variety and taste felt well worth the price, making it a solid pick for a family meal.

Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch is a great spot in Jungnang for a neat, comfortable meal with parents. I'd been a few times before and always left satisfied, so I came back again this time!
Every dish comes out beautifully arranged, and the overall vibe is clean and relaxed, which made it easy to enjoy lunch with my parents. Here's my review after another leisurely lunch at Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch :)

It's right on the street so it's easy to find, and since there's often a wait during the lunch peak, they have waiting chairs set up. There's also cool barley tea ready for you while you wait, haha. Since they take Naver Reservations, I'd recommend booking ahead if you're visiting with a group.

We visited on a weekend lunch and lots of guests were already dining. There are more than 10 tables in the restaurant, so it seemed like a good place for family gatherings too!
Set menu or special — which to order

The menu ranges from a basic set meal to a regular set and a special set, and they also serve ogyeopsal (thick pork belly)! There's also a single-serving gondre-bap menu, so it's good for solo dining too.
The difference between the regular set and the special comes down to the number of side dishes and whether you get the grilled deodeok and grilled hwangtae — but the price gap isn't that big, so if you're visiting with your parents, I'd gently recommend going with the special, hahaha.
The kamasot (cauldron) rice in particular is cooked to order, with three options — gondre-bap, deodeok + shiitake mushroom, and black rice + sweet potato — so you can pick whichever suits your taste. We went with the classic gondre-bap special😌
Doenjang jjigae simmering on the burner and a full spread of side dishes

As soon as we sat down, they put the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) right on the burner! It kept simmering so we could enjoy it warm all the way through, haha.

Then the table started filling up with neat hanjeongsik side dishes, hahaha. Various namul (seasoned vegetable) dishes, ssam vegetables, cheongpomuk (mung bean jelly), braised potatoes, jeyuk-bokkeum (stir-fried pork), lotus root, seasoned chili, broccoli, blanched squid — a hearty spread of exactly the kind of banchan my parents love, so we started eating quickly😄
Grilled deodeok, grilled hwangtae, and grilled fish

Grilled deodeok (bellflower root), grilled hwangtae (dried pollack), and grilled fish all came together, which made the spread feel really substantial😋 The seasoning on the deodeok and hwangtae was especially good — my mom really enjoyed those — and the grilled fish was cooked moist and tender, which made it easy to feed to the kids too, hahaha. Other side dishes are refillable too!
Fresh-cooked kamasot gondre-bap and sungnyung to finish

Seeing we came with kids, they set the fresh-cooked kamasot rice aside separately in case it was too hot. After scooping out the warm rice, they pour hot water into the cauldron and let it sit to make sungnyung.

It's packed with gondre herbs, and you just mix in a bit of the soy sauce seasoning and stir it up, haha.

It's even better if you add in various namul dishes and mix them into the gondre-bap👍🏻 And of course jeyuk-bokkeum tastes best wrapped in a ssam!

And of course, sungnyung to finish~! Our little ones love it too, so we each had a bowl — nutty and warm, it made for a satisfying finish, haha. Overall, from the variety of side dishes to the taste, this Jungnang hanjeongsik place was really satisfying for the price :)
Why it was such a good spot for a meal with parents
Sanchaega Hanjeongsik Meokgol Main Branch was a great place to slowly chat over lunch with my parents! The food was neatly arranged overall, so there was fun in tasting each dish one by one, and the price was easy on the wallet too, which made it even better. If you're looking for a place to eat with your parents in Jungnang, this is one you'll likely be very happy with✨
