Sinnonhyeon coffee shop, iced einspänner and canelé: Upper and Under
In short
Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon is a large dessert café near Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, spread over three floors. A quick after-meal coffee stop turned into three desserts — fig cake, salted choco financier and canelé — with an iced einspänner and an iced americano. Even in crowded Sinnonhyeon, Upper and Under lets you walk up to whichever floor is quiet and settle in.

When you eat near Sinnonhyeon, you kind of have to finish it off with a café stop, right? Haha

That day too I wanted coffee plus dessert, so while looking around for where to go I ended up at Upper and Under's Sinnonhyeon branch :)

How many floors does Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon use?
Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon runs as a café from the 1st to the 3rd floor. Right away the scale felt different from other places. It's a great spot when you want a bit of breathing room for coffee in a busy area like Sinnonhyeon.

The store itself is spacious and each floor has its own space, so it seemed good for chatting with friends, going on a date, or visiting with a group. Above all, the staff were friendly, which made the whole visit feel good :)
How big is the dessert selection at Upper and Under?
Walking into Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon, there's something that catches your eye before the coffee even does... the dessert corner haha! There are seriously a huge number of dessert types!

On the table, financiers, canelés, tarts, and other baked goods you can just pick up one by one are all lined up, and honestly just looking at them makes me happy ♥ There are so many kinds that whenever I pick one, the thing next to it looks delicious too, and then I pick that and something else catches my eye haha. If you love dessert, you might spend quite a while just choosing here.
The showcase also had a great variety of cakes!! From tiramisu to fig, raspberry, lemon — cakes so pretty just by color alone, all lined up! The fig cake especially had so much fig piled on top that the moment I saw it I knew I had to get it haha

Ordering three: fig cake, salted choco financier and canelé
That day I picked fig cake, salted choco financier, and canelé, and ordered an iced einspänner and iced americano to drink. I clearly walked in for just coffee, but somewhere along the way I ended up choosing three whole desserts haha
Fig cake
What I was most looking forward to was definitely the fig cake! Fluffy cake piled with plenty of cream, topped with fig — the look alone was mouthwatering. The soft flavor of the cream together with the fig's natural sweetness paired perfectly with coffee :) I tend to prefer fruit cakes over anything overly sweet, so personally this was the best of everything I picked that day..

Salted choco financier
The salted choco financier was also delicious! The financier's usual nutty, dense flavor combined with chocolate sweetness and a salty accent for a proper sweet-and-salty combo haha. One sip of americano, one bite of salted choco financier — a perfect match ♥
There were so many types of baked goods that I now want to try the other financiers I didn't get to this time haha. Also, I'm the kind of person who can't just walk past a canelé at a café... that's me haha

Canelé
I ordered a canelé too, and its size was just right for setting next to coffee and eating little by little — a different charm from the cake. If I'd only ordered the cake it might have felt a bit lacking, but with the financier and canelé together, it felt like a proper dessert time!

Which drinks to order with the desserts
Since there were so many sweet desserts, the iced americano paired really well, as expected. The einspänner let me enjoy the smooth cream together with coffee, and it was also good for slowly sipping on its own without dessert.
If you're like me — love coffee but can't give up sweet menus either — the einspänner comes highly recommended!!
How easy is it to find a seat near Sinnonhyeon Station?
Another reason I liked Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon was the space! Sinnonhyeon cafés can get so packed during busy hours that you sometimes have to leave without a seat, but this place, spanning 1st to 3rd floor, clearly had that scale. Being able to pick your dessert, get your coffee, and move up to whichever floor you want made it possible to enjoy a relatively relaxed café hour even in the middle of busy Sinnonhyeon :)

The store was kept clean, and the staff were friendly, so from choosing dessert to leaving, the whole visit felt good. I'd especially recommend this place to people who love cake.

The cakes are lined up neatly in the showcase with such a wide variety that it'd be fun to visit with several people and each choose a different one to share. There are also plenty of baked goods to choose from, so on a day when cake feels like too much, just a financier or canelé with coffee would be enough!

Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon: the verdict
If you're looking for a large café in Sinnonhyeon or a place to enjoy coffee and dessert together, give Upper and Under Sinnonhyeon a try :) With spacious floors from 1st to 3rd, a wide variety of cakes and baked goods, and friendly staff, I had a comfortable time there.
The fig cake and salted choco financier especially stuck with me as the tastiest, haha

Next time I'm in Sinnonhyeon, I'd like to stop by again to try the cakes and financiers I didn't get to this time ♥
