Dongjak Korean BBQ for beer and mayo fried rice: Bareun Hwangso
In short
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Dongjak, Seoul, serving assorted beef intestines in a lively outdoor-seating atmosphere. After a long wait on a spontaneous Friday-night meetup, I had two portions of assorted gopchang, beer, and mayo-topped fried rice. Verdict: a Friday-night gopchang spread worth lining up for.

Me, suddenly writing a post after waking up.. I’m going to write about my humble Friday night from the other day. After work, Oppa and I ended up having a spontaneous meetup for the first time in ages.. I was in Gangnam, Oppa was in Sadang!! They said it would take an hour by car from Sadang to Gangnam at 6, so O.K. Impatient me went to Sadang instead! Off to Sadang on the subway~ On the way, we decided to have gopchang (grilled beef intestines), a once-a-year sort of event for me!! Hwangso Gopchang, you’re the one today!!

Huh????????? A wait at around 6:30–6:40? Is this for real?????

I’m not really a waiting-in-line person, so I thought about it... for about three seconds?? Waiting = popular-restaurant vibes? Should we put our name down once?? The weather was nice, so we put our name down and decided to take a lap. And then...... after that long, long wait, we were finally in!! Thanks to that, a stomach that wasn’t hungry became hungry.

Ordering two portions of assorted gopchang and beer
Yes, the second we got in, we scanned the food~ We ordered assorted gopchang for two and a beer. It says that when you order the assorted gopchang, you get “250 g of Korean beef small intestine + Korean beef large intestine + beef makchang (fourth stomach), with beef heart provided free and not included in the weight.” Oh~ what a bargain haha And it says you need to ask for kimchi, garlic, and wasabi, so we asked for them the moment we ordered.

Oh? Wi-Fi at a gopchang place? I’ve never seen that before~ How fun(?)

A hungry grown-up eats cheonyeop (raw beef tripe). Sesame oil and salt dip~ This is a real treat. You’ve got to start with cheonyeop as an appetizer. Nom nom! It was fresh and not at all gamey! Then came the fish cake soup. This alone calls for a whole bottle of soju~ right? (Actually, I can’t drink soju;; )

Then, soon after, our two portions of assorted gopchang arrived. Ah~ so pretty, so pretty~ Let’s get some grease going today haha The staff gave it a good stir. And here’s the alcohol we can’t leave out~ Oppa was driving, so he couldn’t drink; he could only clink glasses... Sorry, Oppa, I’ll enjoy this nice and cold for you;; Ah~ The weather is lovely, and this is the taste of outdoor seating~ What more is happiness? This is happiness, I say-

And I had some makchang, which I love,

It tastes even better eaten like this~ The clean bite of wasabi, the tang of the chili soy sauce, and a pile of garlic chives on top—done~ They brought us extra chives halfway through as a free refill. They were delicious just as they were, but we poured them onto the grill and cooked them too.

The potatoes and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) were little treats too~ You’d miss them if they weren’t there. They’re not in the photo, but the thick-cut mushrooms that came out were as delicious as meat too haha

And another cheers around this point~ Oppa, cheers with me~ You’ve got to wash it all down once! So refreshing~

Grilling kimchi, then mayo fried rice
When we had diligently eaten about half of the daechang (beef large intestine), everyone knows you have to grill some kimchi, right?? (Suddenly formal) After all that feasting, we ordered one serving of fried rice, the Korean dessert.

Oho~ Here, they give you mayo to drizzle on it. Fried rice and mayo—the owner really knows good food_!

Just so you know~ They also have a receipt event. You can get fried noodles or fried rice instead of soju, so even people who can’t drink can take part!! [Randomly out of nowhere; ahem]

Now, it comes out neatly on a new grill rather than the old one. With the feeling of a fresh start~ Shall we eat?

It may be personal preference, but wrapping it up with a little chili on top of perilla-leaf pickles was pure heaven~ I was definitely full, but it went down so quickly? My Friday night with beer and gopchang for the first time in ages~ It was delicious. I think I’ll remember it when I come to Sadang. There’s a reason people line up.
