Dongjak gopchang restaurant for post-work beef offal: Bareun Hwangso
In short
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a gopchang restaurant near Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul. We had two portions of assorted Korean beef intestines after work, followed by smooth draft beer and kkakdugi fried rice. Verdict: a place I’d gladly return to when I’m craving gopchang in Sadang.

After work on Tuesday, my partner and I were craving gopchang, so we went to Bareun Hwangso Gopchang (바른황소곱창) in Sadang ◡̈ My partner is a huge gopchang fan, and Winter gets cravings for it sometimes too. So after work that day, we decided to have gopchang and a beer for dinner 😋

This Sadang favorite sits just inside the food alley, and its red sign was really easy to spot. It is close to Sadang Station, so it was a convenient place to head to after work.

There was also a waiting-list board out front. Winter visited outside peak mealtime, thankfully, so we could go right in.
A compact, lively dining room
My first thought when I stepped inside was, Is it smaller than I expected? The tables were a little close together, but not uncomfortably so. There were already quite a few people drinking when Winter visited, so the overall mood was lively? It felt like a nice place to chat over drinks. There were several tables too, so it looked fine for a group of friends, a Sadang gathering, or even a work dinner.
We ordered two servings of assorted gopchang that day. It was ₩24,000 per serving, and I heard the beef heart and vegetable add-ons are complimentary rather than included in the weighed portion? They also use domestic Korean beef, which made me even more excited.

While waiting for our order, I read up on the benefits of Korean beef intestines! It said they are good with drinks? Reading that at a gopchang restaurant somehow made me feel like I had to eat even more gopchang (?) Is that why they put the Jinro toad next to it? 🤔
As they set out the side dishes, they asked whether we ate cheonyeop (thinly sliced honeycomb tripe). Since both of us do, they served it with sesame oil dipping sauce and ssamjang (savory soybean paste dip).

The gopchang sauce came out too, and unlike sauces I have had elsewhere, it seemed to have minced garlic in it, with such a nice savory depth. Aren’t the wet wipes adorable too . . ? I gave my partner the health charm, while Winter used the charm that says everything will go well (^^) Lucky mat-ru~ 🍀
There was also fish cake and bean-sprout soup, and since my partner loves both fish cake and bean sprouts, this was totally Partner Day! It came in a ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl), so it stayed warm until the end and was great for clearing our palates now and then.

The accompanying sides were buchu (garlic chives) and pickled perilla leaves. They were all good at cutting through the richness of the gopchang, so I was happy with them ✨

The wall décor was memorable too: moody poster photos, celebrity signatures, and, on another wall, soju bottle caps. The little hearts made from red caps were cute, and I was fascinated that they had collected individual caps to decorate like this, so Winter stared at them for quite a while haha. Seeing them piled up one by one made me think that so many people must have stopped by for drinks here. Can I contribute to the soju-cap décor too, owner? 🤭

What order should you eat par-cooked assorted gopchang in?
Our assorted grill arrived not long after ordering! It included gopchang, daechang (beef large intestine), makchang (beef abomasum), and beef heart, plus garlic chives, potato, rice cake, onion, and mushrooms. With so many things on one pan, wasn’t the presentation absolutely insane right from the start? Winter loves when everything is piled onto one pan and stir-fried together, so it looked even more delicious haha.
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang serves its gopchang partially cooked. A staff member stir-fried it once for us, and after about one minute, it was ready to eat. I liked not having to wait long because it was already par-cooked, and the staff member told us to eat the beef heart first because it can get tough if left too long. Being told the eating order like this made it easy even for a first visit.
First up, the beef heart they told us to eat right away! The beef heart at Bareun Hwangso Gopchang had amazingly no off smell at all, so it was easy to enjoy. The main gopchang pieces were a decent size and visibly full of filling! Overall, they were nutty and rich without being greasy or tough. The outside seemed crisply grilled, while the inside was soft and chewy, so I kept reaching for more.
Next was makchang! Neither Winter nor my partner usually prefers makchang that much, but this was probably among the softest Winter has ever had. Its characteristic tough texture was not too strong, and it chewed far more tenderly than expected.

The menu said fresh wasabi and kimchi were available upon request, so we asked for them before eating the daechang. I liked that a gopchang restaurant had wasabi ready separately, and even more that it was fresh wasabi rather than regular prepared wasabi.

The daechang was nicely balanced with wasabi too. Personally, I liked it enough to rank it among the top three gopchang places Winter has visited.
Draft beer and kkakdugi fried rice, too
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang has a receipt-review event! They give you a bottle of soju if you save the place and write a receipt review. The moment I saw that, the drink showcase caught my eye . . Ah? Why didn’t I order alcohol . . ?
I spent ages deciding what to pair with the food, then remembered the draft-beer launch sign outside the restaurant. Gopchang really calls for draft beer! Seriously, I thought this place might be a draft-beer specialist. Why was the foam so creamy ㅠ If my partner had not stopped me, I would have had five glasses . . .

I piled on the pickled perilla leaves, garlic chives, and gopchang from the side dishes, and having it with beer made me so happy. A bite of gopchang followed by a cool sip of draft beer was a perfect combination . . ♥

After we had eaten a fair amount of gopchang, we ordered fried rice because we were sad to finish! I debated between Buldak thick noodles and kkakdugi fried rice, but Winter cannot handle spice very well, so kkakdugi fried rice won! I saw the Buldak thick noodles at the next table, and they used udon noodles rather than regular noodles? It is apparently a signature menu item, so I want to try it next time too.
We ordered one serving of kkakdugi fried rice, and interestingly, it arrived separately on a new iron pan. The fried rice came stir-fried with kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), flying-fish roe, and seaweed flakes; it was generously portioned and tasty. The seasoning was just right for Winter, but my partner, who likes saltier food, found it a little mild. They said it was delicious with a little gopchang sauce added.

Another thing I loved was that they served the mayonnaise sauce separately! Winter loves mayonnaise, so I poured on plenty for my fried rice, while my partner, who does not really like it, ate from the side without it. Since it was not drizzled on from the start, we could each eat it the way we liked.

Personally, I really hope you order the kkakdugi fried rice alongside your gopchang.

The food was delicious, but the staff were genuinely kind too. They responded kindly when we ordered or asked for extras, and the food came out fairly quickly, so we did not have a long wait. Most of all, my partner left their phone at the restaurant on the way home (I cannot even imagine how good the gopchang must have been . .). Even when we contacted them again, they held onto it so kindly without a hint of annoyance, and I was truly grateful.
Overall, Bareun Hwangso Gopchang was a Sadang beef-gopchang restaurant that felt very satisfying for the price! We decided to come back with friends next time, and I think it would be great for a Sadang get-together or work dinner too. Whenever Winter craves gopchang in Sadang, I think Bareun Hwangso Gopchang will come to mind ◡̈
