What kind of café is Kamerine?

If you're looking for a unique date with your kid, Kamerine — where you can actually interact with animals — might be just the place.

Personally, it's not easy for me to find opportunities to introduce my son to bugs or animals in everyday life, so I'd been craving this kind of experience. I found a café that could scratch that itch, so I visited with my son, just the two of us.

Parking and how to find Kamerine

Kamerine is on the 2nd floor, Unit 201, of a building at 221 Bonghwasan-ro, Jungnang-gu, Seoul, and there's underground parking in the building too, so it was easy to get to without any hassle.

I went straight there after picking my son up from kindergarten. We took the building's elevator up to the 2nd floor.

What's included in the kids' ecology exploration package?

That day, I tried Kamerine's kids' ecology exploration package.

It includes one drink, a craft activity for kids, and time to learn about and interact with the animals, so I picked it without hesitation. First, my son and I each picked a drink. For reference, we ordered two strawberry milk lattes (딸바).

Right next to us was a big table, well set up so that if several families come together with their kids, the adults can sit there and enjoy a cup of tea while they wait.

Our drinks arrived and we sipped them slowly while waiting for the explanation time to start. Both my son and I enjoyed them.

Crickets, lizards and chameleons inside the café

Personally, this cricket enclosure was the first thing that caught my eye. It looked like a container the crickets could easily escape from, and indeed it was kept open. But apparently crickets don't jump very high, and since the container is smooth and slick, they can't get a grip to climb out.

Before the explanation session started, we were free to wander around the café and look at the lizards and chameleons.

Watching my son stare at them, totally absorbed, I thought — I'm so glad we came. Lately he's been getting into watching animals like these on YouTube, but seeing them for real got him even more hooked.

We also spotted a chameleon in camouflage. It wasn't easy to find, which made the encounter even more fun.

There were several kinds of lizards too. The owner had brought in animals they personally raise and built this whole hands-on experience around them while running the café.

The animal talk and holding a lizard on your hand

The owner then spent time explaining each animal to the kids one by one. They actually have their own children, and since these are reptiles they've raised themselves, you could feel how genuine and heartfelt the explanations were.

Getting to actually hold them and feel them in your hands might be the highlight of this whole program.

My son is a little on the timid side, but he worked up the courage to touch and feel them little by little. Each lizard felt different — some were surprisingly soft — so it was a fascinating, fun experience not just for him but for me too.

We also got to try putting one on our shoulder and turning around once.

The craft session: making a chameleon whistle

Once the animal experience at Kamerine wraps up, what's left is the craft activity.

You pick one of three options, make it yourself, and take it home — that's it.

We picked the chameleon whistle and worked diligently on it right to the end.

We cut, colored, and glued each piece to finish it. If the child is very young, a parent might need to help with the cutting, but I'd say most kids can handle the rest on their own.

Now it's really the last step. They gave us an instant photo as a keepsake and even a certificate. It felt like an extra-special gift, leaving us with a tangible memory of the day with my son.
