Suwon mala xiang guo restaurant for a 3pm solo meal: Rahongbang

In short

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is a malatang and mala xiang guo restaurant in Cheoncheon-dong, Suwon, near Sungkyunkwan University Station. Arriving alone at 3pm after a hair salon treatment, the writer filled a basket from the 50-plus ingredients and ordered mala xiang guo at spice level 1 (mild) plus a single-serving lemon cream shrimp, and the broth-free stir-fry, with its sauce clinging to every piece, went well with the tangy, crisp shrimp. Rahongbang is an easy solo stop on a day when only something spicy will do.

Why a 3pm solo visit to Rahongbang Malatang in Cheoncheon-dong

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is a malatang and mala xiang guo spot in Cheoncheon-dong, Suwon, near Sungkyunkwan University Station. I'd just come out of a hair salon clinic treatment in Cheoncheon-dong and the weather was just too~~ good. I hadn't had lunch either, and I was craving something spicy and intense, so I went to the malatang place next to the salon.

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is near Sungkyunkwan University Station, so it's a great spot for students to grab lunch or dinner. There's a Lotte Mart and a Starfield nearby too, so a lot of people stop by while out running errands.

Inside Rahongbang Malatang: solo counter seats to group tables

The inside of Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is pretty clean, right? There's a range of seating from solo-dining spots to group tables, so it's a satisfying Cheoncheon-dong go-to whether you're eating alone or with a crowd.

The interior shots were taken when it was empty, so it looks like there's no one there, but when I went around 3pm it was actually pretty packed, with a lot of young folks who looked like Sungkyunkwan University students. There are a lot of elementary, middle, and high schools nearby too, so it's a really popular malatang spot in Cheoncheon-dong with students. These days malatang seems to be a really popular menu with middle and high schoolers too.

The menu and picking your own ingredients at Rahongbang

At Rahongbang, the malatang spot in Cheoncheon-dong, they sell not just malatang and mala xiang guo but also guobaorou (Chinese sweet and sour pork), egg fried rice, and lemon cream shrimp.

There's a wide range of vegetables and ingredients along with beef and lamb prepared, and you pick the vegetables, ingredients, and meat you want into a basket, get it weighed, then decide whether to go malatang or mala xiang guo.

How does Rahongbang's level 1 mala xiang guo taste?

I like malatang too, but I prefer the drier, saucier mala xiang guo more, so that's what I ordered, and I also got lemon cream shrimp since it seemed like it'd pair well with something sweet. I ordered mala xiang guo, a single-serving lemon cream shrimp, and one can of zero cola. I set the mala xiang guo spice level to 1, mild.

Since mala xiang guo has no broth, the seasoning stays coated right on the ingredients, so the flavor felt intense from the very first bite.

At first the spicy flavor hits first, and then that distinctive mala numbing aroma slowly creeps up after.

That said, it's not just spicy for the sake of being spicy — it's salty with a savory depth too, so my chopsticks kept going back for more.

Mala xiang guo with the single-serving lemon cream shrimp

This is the lemon cream shrimp — plump shrimp hand-battered, served with a tangy sauce, and crispy, it was genuinely delicious.

I'd recommend the mala xiang guo and lemon cream shrimp combo.

It had been a while since I'd had it, and the spicy, numbing flavor really brought my appetite back to life. Being able to pick your own ingredients to your taste is the great thing about mala xiang guo, so next time I want to try making it again with different ingredients. This is a menu that'll come to mind on days when you're craving something spicy, or just want something a little different from usual.
