Café in Eunhaeng-dong, Daejeon: cat-shaped cheesecake & toast at HUSK

HUSK is a café on Bomun-ro in Eunhaeng-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, that also serves Danish home-style brunch from the morning until 15:00. On a day off, the writer ordered two iced americanos, a cheesecake and a cream cheese toast at HUSK, and found that the rich cheesecake and the fresh blueberry toast paired well with the coffee. With iced americanos at 4,500 won and desserts from 5,500 won, HUSK is a good-value choice for anyone looking for a dessert café in Eunhaeng-dong.

Suwon Korean pub near Ajou University: chicken hotpot with rice, Hwial

Hwial Ajou University Branch (휘얼 아주대점) is a Korean pub near Ajou University in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, close to Gwanggyo. The nurungji (scorched rice) chicken hotpot at 25,000 won, with a bowl of rice added, made a full meal, alongside beef yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef) and egg scramble, finished with ricotta cheese and ice persimmon at 13,000 won. Hwial Ajou University Branch is a dimly lit, atmospheric pub for dates and get-togethers, and the ricotta cheese with ice persimmon is the dessert to order.

Yongin vintage mall with my kid: Burberry jacket on hold, TOKYO USED

TOKYO USED Flagship Store is a two-floor, extra-large vintage shopping mall near Gogiri in Suji-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi, a short trip from Bundang. On a weekend visit with a child, the writer browsed Hawaiian shirts, luxury bags and sunglasses on the 1st floor of TOKYO USED, then color-sorted womenswear and a mountain-view rest area on the 2nd floor, and put a Burberry shirt and jacket on hold. The verdict: TOKYO USED's biggest draw is Japanese vintage shopping in Gyeonggi without a trip to Tokyo.

Shabu-kalguksu in Dongcheon-dong: hourglass flat noodles, Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant on a main road in Dongcheon-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin. On a hot weekend with a child, the writer chose the mild white broth and ate sirloin shabu-shabu, flat kalguksu noodles, crispy seafood pajeon (savory pancake) and minari fried rice. Sanitized tableware, Pororo kids' dishes and an hourglass at every seat stood out. At 11,500 won per person with fried rice included, Yun Ujae is a great-value spot for a family meal.

Seasonique (시즈니크) is a seasonal fruit cake shop in Sweet Park on B1 of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam, by Express Bus Terminal Station in Seocho, Seoul. The writer browsed Seasonique's summer mango cake lineup, took home a mango fromage tart (₩25,000) packed with an ice pack, and shared it at home with their child. Packed with mango and fresh cream all the way through, Seasonique's cakes are a strong pick for birthdays and gifts.

Jeongja-dong café: warm butter tteok & Victoria cake, Butter & Shelter

Butter & Shelter Bundang Jeongja is a butter sand and butter tteok (chewy butter rice cake) dessert café in the Dongyang Paragon apartment shopping arcade in Jeongja-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam. On a weekend family outing, the writer ordered an iced americano, a mango coconut ade, butter tteok (₩2,500) and Victoria cake (₩7,800), and the warm, chewy butter tteok and the pound-cake-like Victoria cake sponge stood out. The butter tteok alone makes Butter & Shelter a Jeongja-dong dessert café worth returning to.

Weekend stamina beef BBQ for family in Yeongtong, Suwon: Sogogi Twist

Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch (소고기트위스트 영통구청점) is a new Korean BBQ restaurant on the 1st floor of Millennium Plaza on Hyowon-ro in Yeongtong, Suwon, serving prime-grade beef, Handon (Korean pork) belly and neck, and Australian wagyu. The writer's family booked through Naver Reservation for a weekend stamina meal, received 200g of free brisket as an opening event, and ate a 1kg prime beef platter of kkotsaeusal, chuck flap and jebichuri plus doenjang sul-bap. With plenty of side dishes, a clean dining room and good value, Sogogi Twist Yeongtong is a solid Suwon beef BBQ pick for family gatherings or company dinners.

Bojeong-dong shabu restaurant, crab minari & porridge: Seokmuneo

Seokmuneo Yongin Bojeong (석문어 용인보정점) is a stone octopus and shabu-shabu restaurant at the entrance of the Bojeong-dong café street in Giheung-gu, Yongin. A regular family ordered the Octopus Jinsim Set for two (49,000 won) on a rainy evening. They loved the refreshing minari (Korean water dropwort) shabu-shabu broth with a whole crab, and the stone octopus pancake and minari porridge finish were just as satisfying. Seokmuneo Yongin Bojeong suits families of big eaters looking for a generous set.

Seafood kalguksu in Oido, Siheung with free lunch parking: 52 Degree

52 Degree Kalguksu Oido Main Branch (오십이도칼국수 오이도본점) is a seafood pot kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in front of the Oido pier in Siheung, Gyeonggi. The writer's family came for lunch on a long-weekend Saturday and shared 2 portions of seafood pot kalguksu at ₩21,000 each plus a chive pancake, enjoying a refreshing broth made with two blue crabs, complimentary yeolmu boribap (young radish barley rice) and matcha and basalt ice cream. For a generous Jeju-style stainless pot packed with seafood in Oido, 52 Degree Kalguksu is a satisfying choice.

Bojeong-dong BBQ restaurant, truffle cream risotto and ribs: Rustic

Rustic Smokehouse Yongin Bojeong Branch is an American BBQ restaurant just off the Bojeong-dong café street in Yongin, Gyeonggi. The writer booked ahead, visited with a child, and ordered a BBQ single plate of baby back ribs, truffle cream risotto and chili shrimp tacos. The rich truffle cream risotto paired especially well with the well-seasoned ribs. Verdict: for American BBQ with easy parking, Rustic Smokehouse Yongin Bojeong Branch is a solid recommendation.

Cold-day Yangjae café: hot Helsinki and strawberry lattes, Mini Male

Mini Male Coffee Roasters Yangjae Main Branch (미니말레 커피뢰스터 양재본점) is a roastery café near Yangjae Citizen's Forest in Seocho, Seoul, whose signature drink is the Helsinki latte. On a late afternoon while coming down with a cold, the writer visited with a child and had a hot Helsinki latte, a strawberry latte, salt bread and an apple crumble financier, though arriving late meant much of the bread had already sold out. The nutty, coffee-rich hot Helsinki latte alone is reason enough to return to Mini Male Yangjae Main Branch.

Yongin BBQ: frozen & fresh pork belly, kimchi stew, Gangnam Naengyeop

Gangnam Naengyeop Yongin Bojeong Branch (강남랭겹 용인보정점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving frozen and fresh pork belly at the start of the Bojeong-dong café street in Yongin. The writer grilled 2 servings of flash-frozen pork belly (₩14,000 per 160g) and 1 serving of fresh pork belly (₩15,000) on a pig-shaped grill, then added kimchi stew made with house-made kimchi; the meat had no gamey smell and the stew was spicy and satisfying. With its large hall, Gangnam Naengyeop Yongin Bojeong Branch is worth considering for group meals or company dinners in Bojeong-dong.
