I recently took a late-summer vacation to Danyang~! While planning the trip, the food I most wanted to try was black garlic. I was looking for a good place near Danyang Gugyeong Market and had a hard time choosing because there are so many famous spots nearby, but I ultimately picked Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap, which is also listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey 🧄

Arriving at Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap at opening time
Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is at 9 Dojeon 2-ro, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Hours are 10:30–20:00, with a break from 14:30–16:00 and last orders at 19:20.
As you would expect from a popular restaurant near Danyang Gugyeong Market, I saw so many reviews saying there is always a long line and that waiting is essential, so I made a point of arriving right at the 10:30 a.m. opening time.

Thanks to that, I got in straight away without waiting! Haha

They also run a second location nearby called “Black Garlic Barley Rice,” you know? I am a total Korean-food person, so I really agonized over the two places, but after looking through reviews, I got hooked by the glossy-looking boiled pork and finally chose the ssambap.. 😋

A full set of black garlic boiled-pork ssambap
There were three signature types of ssambap (rice and wraps): squid, spicy pork, and boiled pork. They all looked delicious, so I hesitated for a moment, but I was curious about the combination of boiled pork and black garlic, so I ordered the black garlic boiled-pork ssambap.

Before long, eight neatly arranged side dishes arrived along with fresh, colorful wrap vegetables.

None of the side dishes were overly seasoned—they were all just right, so I kept reaching for them. The crunchy mumallaengi (dried shredded radish) was especially memorable; it was absolutely perfect on top of the mild boiled pork.

Even the doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew) that came with the meal was a delight 🥹

Even though it is served as part of the meal, the earthenware pot was generously filled with ingredients.. The broth was deep and savory, making it perfect with rice 👍

Receipt review event

If you take part in the receipt review event, you can receive a complimentary bottle of makgeolli. If you visit, I definitely recommend joining the event and enjoying it as a delicious drink with your meal.
The main boiled pork was cooked beautifully—moist, tender, and without any unpleasant pork smell.

Above all, the house garlic sauce generously poured over the pork was the real kick. It brought out garlic’s subtle sweetness and made the pork’s savory juices taste even cleaner.

The gangdoenjang (thick soybean-paste dip) served alongside it was a special treat too! The little shovel-shaped spoon was adorable, haha.

Unlike regular ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), it was not aggressively salty. Softly mashed tofu gave it a nutty, mild flavor, so even adding a generous spoonful to a wrap never felt heavy.

The wonderfully chewy black garlic rice I loved most
And what impressed me most was this black garlic rice. The rice was so wonderfully sticky that its texture was incredibly chewy.. It was so delicious!!

With every bite, a subtle black garlic aroma came through, and it was full of savory depth even when I chewed the rice on its own without meat. I opened up a fresh leaf of wrap greens and made a big wrap with pork, ssamjang, dried radish, and sliced raw garlic—such a burst of flavor in my mouth.

Black garlic makgeolli with the boiled pork
The black garlic makgeolli I ordered because I thought it would pair well with the pork also got an immediate taste!

I was a little worried that the garlic aroma might be too strong or taste cloying, but once I tried it, it went down so cleanly! The garlic’s gentle bite was balanced by subtle sweetness and nuttiness, making it an easy drink that anyone could enjoy. It felt like a refreshing palate cleanser after the pork, so it was ideal as a meal accompaniment.

Final thoughts
From the main boiled pork and house sauce to the black garlic rice, gangdoenjang, and clean-tasting makgeolli, this was a thoroughly satisfying lunch with nothing missing. I could completely understand both why it received a Blue Ribbon and why the lines are so long. If you are planning to visit Danyang Gugyeong Market, I strongly recommend stopping by for this neat and delicious black garlic ssambap!
