Seoul Station gyukatsu restaurant, Set 4 with hamburg steak: Ichigyu

My husband had to work over Chuseok, so I visited his parents' place ahead of time. By the time I got to Seoul Station it was dinnertime and I was starving. I still had a long subway ride home ahead of me, and I knew I'd be way too hungry by the time I got there, so I looked up good restaurants near Seoul Station. I found a gyukatsu place where you could eat something quick and simple, so I went to Ichigyu. Here's the full review!

Where Ichigyu Seoul Station Branch is and how to get there

Ichigyu is about a 10-minute walk from Seoul Station. Coming out of Subway Exit 11 was the closest route.

It's located inside the LG Seoul Station Building. Go in through the main entrance, and to the right you'll see an escalator heading down to the basement — take that.

Turn right past the escalator and Ichigyu is right there!

Weekday 7pm at Ichigyu: atmosphere and seating

The place had a strong Japanese vibe, nice atmosphere. There were 2-seat and 4-seat tables, quite a few of them. I visited on a weekday at 7pm and got seated with no wait at all. There's no restroom inside the restaurant, but you can use the one in the building, on the left side of the escalator.

Ichigyu menu: what comes in Set 4

We ordered Set 4 from the set menus. It's gyukatsu + hamburg steak + 2 drinks. Since the set gives you an extra drink for basically the same price, ordering a set is the better deal.

How were the gyukatsu and the griddled chopped steak?

Rice came out first, and the portion was generous. They said refills were available too.

First up is Ichigyu's signature dish, the sirloin gyukatsu.

Sirloin gyukatsu grilled with Isigny butter

The gyukatsu comes out fried crisp on the outside but medium-rare inside, so you grill it piece by piece on the brazier at your table. The flame was strong, so it cooked fast — and it stayed hot enough all the way through the meal, which I liked.

They serve it with a fancy French Isigny butter on the side. We tried grilling it both with and without butter, and grilling with butter was definitely tastier! Also, without the Isigny butter, the meat kept sticking to the brazier, making it hard to grill... haha.

The crispy fried coating against the tender sirloin texture was great. There are salt, wasabi, and a special sauce to dip it in, but personally, salt was the tastiest for me.

Griddled chopped steak in a ketchup-based sauce

The griddled steki (chopped steak) had a ketchup-based sauce flavor. It wasn't your typical steak sauce taste — it tasted like ketchup, so it was a familiar flavor.

On top there were garlic flakes and a fried egg, plus a surprising amount of ham mixed in. Beyond just the hamburg steak itself, you got to enjoy a variety of flavors.
