Euljiro snack bar with vegetable fritters, no drinks: Hyeonseoni-ne

In short

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school snack bar right in front of Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Instead of the tabletop instant tteokbokki, the writer ordered the 25,000-won Hyeonseoni Combo Set — tteokbokki, sundae (blood sausage), fritters, fish cake and gimbap — at medium spice and ate it with no alcohol, rating the wheat-rice-cake broth tteokbokki, handmade sundae and vegetable fritters the best of the set. Hyeonseoni-ne is a good-value pick if you like tent seating and vintage snack-bar atmosphere.

First photo from the visit to Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch

Euljiro 1-ga snack bar restaurant 🍤 I finally visited Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, one of Korea's 3 famous tteokbokki spots!! It's been such a hyped place for a while and I was so curious… haha 😝😝

How to find Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch from Exit 3

This Euljiro 1-ga station snack bar was easy to find — it's right in front of Exit 3.

The menu board, the phone-booth kiosk and the alley entrance

Large menu board and phone-booth-shaped kiosk at the entrance

There's a big menu board at the entrance, and next to it a kiosk shaped like an old public phone booth. At first I was confused about where the entrance even was, since it looks like an alley — how funny is that. That's exactly the old-school (노포) vibe, I guess.

+ It's already famous, so it was packed, and the seats are pretty close together, so I couldn't take interior photos — but if you like tent-bar (야장) seating and old-school atmosphere, you'll definitely love it here.

Especially if you like drinking 🍻, this is a must. The weather's gotten milder and cooler too, and the combo of cold beer with sweet-spicy tteokbokki is just perfect… 🥹 My partner and I don't drink much so we just did the snack food tour, but almost every other table was drinking hahahaha. That just shows how much the vibe and the taste here are guaranteed!

What comes in the 25,000-won Hyeonseoni Combo Set

I debated between the instant tteokbokki and this, but I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I went with the Hyeonseoni Combo Set. It comes with tteokbokki, sundae (Korean blood sausage), fritters, fish cake, and gimbap (seaweed rice roll) — all for ₩25,000, which is excellent value.

Broth tteokbokki ordered in medium spice

Wheat-rice-cake tteokbokki: is medium spice really like Shin Ramyun?

The tteokbokki here is the broth style. I personally like rice rice cakes, but broth tteokbokki calls for wheat rice cakes — and they were so chewy. They said medium spice is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, so I ordered medium, and it was just the right level of spicy 💗💗

Fish cake soaked in tteokbokki broth

The fish cake had soaked up plenty of broth too, so the seasoning had fully sunk in and it was delicious.

Plate of Hyeonseoni-ne's dark-colored handmade sundae

Handmade sundae that isn't just glass noodles

This Euljiro 1-ga station snack bar's sundae is handmade. The color was definitely a bit darker than regular sundae, and the taste really told you it was handmade. Usually when I eat sundae I only bite into glass noodles and feel bloated afterward, but Hyeonseoni-ne's sundae wasn't like that at all — clearly they use good ingredients, which made me realize why this place is famous.

Fish cake cut into bite-sized pieces

Fish cake, pre-cut into easy bites

The fish cake came pre-cut into easy bites. It might seem like a small thing, but to me it felt like a really nice touch. Bite-sized pieces meant I could dip them in the broth or in the tteokbokki sauce, and the broth itself wasn't too salty — it had a nice, refreshing taste.

Mini gimbap cut into easy bites
Nostalgic mini gimbap included in the combo set

Mini gimbap that tastes like childhood

These are the nostalgic mini gimbap, also cut into easy bites. I used to eat these a lot as a kid, but these days it's rarer to find shops selling mini gimbap. Whenever I spotted them at a street tteokbokki cart, I'd always buy them — total childhood memory in one bite.

They were packed full inside too. Straight into the tteokbokki broth they went. Soak them well, and the spicy-sweet broth seeps all the way into the gimbap, taking the flavor up at least double.

Plate of crispy fried fritters from the combo set
Vegetable fritters, the writer's top pick

My top pick at Hyeonseoni-ne: the vegetable fritters

This is the fried element of the classic tteok-twi-sun (tteokbokki-fritter-sundae) trio, and the color on these fritters was gorgeous. They must use good oil — no old-oil drips, no stale-oil smell, just genuinely delicious fried food, which felt rare these days. The batter was crispy and not too thick either, which I loved. If I had to pick one favorite, it's the vegetable fritters — probably the best vegetable fritters I've ever had. You have to try them! Highly recommend the fritters at Hyeonseoni-ne 👍🏻👍🏻

Who will enjoy Hyeonseoni-ne most?

Hyeonseoni-ne's tteokbokki lineup includes both instant and broth-style tteokbokki along with plenty of great drinking snacks. The space is open-air and full of old-school character, making it a great-value snack bar for grabbing a drink with coworkers, a partner, or on your own after work — definitely worth a visit 🩷
