Yeoksam eel restaurant with potato croquette side: Chisot Yeoksam
In short
Chisot Yeoksam Main Branch is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Bongeunsa-ro 30-gil, right in front of Exit 7 of Yeoksam Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The hitsumabushi set (grilled eel over rice) came with one and a half eels — enough that eel was still left over after one piece per spoonful of rice — and the four-way method with yakumi (condiments) and ochazuke (green tea poured over rice) each tasted different. With a potato croquette on the side, Chisot Yeoksam makes a properly filling meal near Yeoksam Station.

What comes with the hitsumabushi set at Chisot Yeoksam
🍱 Hitsumabushi set
The eel rice bowl arrives as a neatly plated full spread, and just looking at it makes you go 'wow.' Grilled three times over charcoal, a faint smoky aroma drifts by, and the tare sauce has soaked deep into the eel. Maybe because the freshwater eel is aged for 72 hours, the texture is moist while the outside is softly grilled.

One and a half eels: how much eel is that?
Zoom in on the good part!! Seriously, 'one and a half eels' means a lot of eel — so much that I ran out of rice and ended up eating the eel on its own at the end. If you don't have a big appetite, I don't think you could finish the special set, haha.
Can you see how packed with eel it is! I really was eating one piece of eel per spoonful of rice and there was still eel left over — I was so happy. There wasn't a single small bone in the eel, it was chewy and soft, and I ate every bit happily. If you like hitsumabushi, I highly recommend Chisot. I think I'll keep thinking about it next time I want hitsumabushi again!

You can top it with the scallions, wasabi, and seaweed flakes that come alongside, or pour warm ochazuke over it, to enjoy a range of different flavors. The soft steamed egg, chawanmushi, is also great for settling your stomach first.

How to eat hitsumabushi in four stages, from yakumi to ochazuke
With ochazuke, yakumi, and various combinations, you can enjoy the eel rice bowl in many different ways.
- 1) Eat rice + eel plain
- 2) Mix rice + seaweed + wasabi + scallions + eel together
- 3) Pour ochazuke over rice + eel
- 4) Eat the way you liked best, one more time
Whenever I come to eat eel rice bowl, I always split it into four the way it's suggested and follow the instructions. Each way has its own charm, so it's hard to say which is best — I like all of methods 1 through 3. For the last, fourth portion, I always seem to end up eating rice + eel + wasabi.

The potato croquette side at Chisot Yeoksam
🥔 Potato croquette
Fresh out of the fryer, hot and golden, its color alone is appetizing. The outside is satisfyingly crispy and the inside is packed full of fluffy potato — a textbook crispy-outside, soft-inside croquette. A gentle savory flavor spreads through your mouth, and it pairs perfectly as a side with the eel rice bowl.

Interior and seating at Chisot Yeoksam Main Branch
The moment you step in, the upscale, warm wood-tone interior puts your mind at ease. Neat framed art and detailed touches on every wall add a distinctly refined feel.

From the main dish to the side dishes, everything is arranged neatly as one full spread, so it feels like you're being properly looked after. Write a Naver receipt review as part of their event and you get 2pc of savory salmon jang for free.

They use Japonica freshwater eel aged 72 hours, so there's no fishy taste, just deep flavor. The tables are arranged cozily yet comfortably, making it a great atmosphere to quietly enjoy a meal. The staff also greeted us kindly, so I felt good from the moment I walked in.
If you want a hearty, special meal near Yeoksam Station, I really recommend giving this place a visit.
