Hongdae takeout chicken with mozzarella cheese balls: Goobne Red Road

In short

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is a chicken pub in Mapo, Seoul, a 10-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 9, spread over two floors in red and black. A Friday evening takeout order of Gochu Basasak (spicy crispy chicken) at 22,900 won and mozzarella cheese balls at 6,000 won came after a 30-minute wait and was eaten at home with beer. The oven-roasted chicken never tasted greasy, and the two sauces, Goblin and Marbling, let you pick between spicy and mild.

Where Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is and when it opens

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is a chicken pub at 17 Jandari-ro 2-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, spread across the basement and 1st floor. It's open daily from 11:00 to 02:00.

Of all the chicken out there, I'm a sucker for oven-roasted chicken, and Goobne's Gochu Basasak is my absolute favorite, haha. It's not fried in oil but roasted in an oven so all the grease is gone — I got it to go and enjoyed it with beer. Here's my review of Goobne Chicken, where the mild kick of cheongyang chili and the unbeatable combo of Marbling and Goblin sauces come together perfectly.

This time I visited a well-known Hongdae chicken spot, Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road, a 10-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 9. It's a street I walk often, so it was easy to find.

Red-and-black interior and the outdoor terrace seats

The bold red-and-black combo at Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road really stood out. There's even an outdoor terrace (yajang), so on nice-weather days like these you'd better claim a terrace seat fast, haha.

The interior is also accented in red!! It's almost a shame I only stopped by for takeout — the gorgeous interior and pub atmosphere make this Hongdae chicken spot, Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road, a great place for a drink.

One side is accented in black!! It's a young, trendy chicken pub that feels right at home in Hongdae. I sat on these black chairs waiting for my order, and the whole place felt hip and lively.

Why the 2nd-floor group tables suit team dinners

The store has a 1st floor and a 2nd floor, so I went up to check out the 2nd floor too — it has group seating, which looks great for work dinners or larger gatherings.

Goobne Chicken menu prices and country of origin

After looking around the store, I checked out the Goobne Chicken menu. There's a wide range, from the original oven-roasted classic to the signature Gochu Basasak, Galbi Cheonwang, the fiery hot Volcano, and Namhae Garlic Basasak. Turns out Goobne also has pizza! There's quite a variety, so if you've got a bigger group it might be worth ordering pizza alongside the chicken. By the way, Goobne's signature pizza turned out to be a Chicago-style pizza, haha.

The country-of-origin labeling was also clearly displayed. Every chicken menu item at Goobne Chicken is domestic (Korean). Boneless chicken is usually from Brazil, so it's great that even the boneless option here is domestic!!

Friday evening takeout: a 30-minute wait

Thanks to Friday-night demand, I waited 30 minutes for my takeout. There were a lot of customers inside, and I was told orders were backed up. While I waited I looked around the store and the time passed quickly, but I couldn't do much about being hungry. After the wait, I grabbed my chicken and headed home~~ My partner, who'd gotten off work early, was practically craning their neck waiting for me. And so our dinner delivery mission was complete~

What I ordered was the Gochu Basasak chicken and the Mozzarella Cheese Balls, both to go.

Marbling sauce vs Goblin sauce: which to pick

There are two sauces: Goobne's Marbling sauce and Goblin sauce. Gochu Basasak is delicious on its own, but if you want it a bit milder, go for Marbling; if you want more heat, Goblin sauce is the way to go.

Since the chicken alone felt like it wasn't quite enough, I also picked the Mozzarella Cheese Balls. Mozzarella cheese — how could that not be good?

How the Gochu Basasak tasted at home with beer

With the long-awaited Gochu Basasak, the first bite brought the flavor of cheongyang chili and a crispy texture, and since it's oven-roasted, I could eat it without any greasiness. The Goblin sauce, with its spicy kick, is a must-have for someone like me who loves heat. The Marbling sauce also paired well with the chili seasoning and brought out a softer, milder flavor.
