Eulwangri octopus stir-fry with self-serve bean sprouts: Haesanggung

I went out to Yeongjong Island craving spicy octopus stir-fry, so I stopped by Haesanggung (해상궁). They have a set menu that lets you enjoy octopus stir-fry, seafood kalguksu (칼국수, knife-cut noodle soup), and whole octopus pancake all at once, so I ordered it right away.

The food was delicious and the owner was really kind‼️ Plus it's dog-friendly, so it seems like a great spot to visit with your pup while out and about on Yeongjong Island☺️

Haesanggung menu and prices in Yeongjong

Haesanggung has a wide variety of menu items, from octopus stir-fry to abalone-octopus stir-fry, seafood kalguksu, and whole octopus pancake.

Since we wanted to taste a little of everything, we ordered the Haesanggung set for two at ₩57,000. The set for two comes with 1 octopus stir-fry, 1 seafood kalguksu, 1 whole octopus pancake, and 1 turmeric rice.

If you only order octopus stir-fry, you'll miss the kalguksu, but if you just get kalguksu, you'll want the pancake too, right?😂 For people like that, the set menu felt like a pretty good option.

Roomy seating at Haesanggung, from indoor tables to the outdoor terrace

Stepping inside Haesanggung, there were plenty of tables ready. Overall it wasn't flashy but had a comfortable atmosphere for eating, and the tables weren't crammed together.

What especially caught my eye was the outdoor area — a lush green garden with outdoor tables right beside it, perfect for eating outside on a nice day. It really gave off that Yeongjong day-trip vibe.

Can you bring your dog to Haesanggung?

Haesanggung is a dog-friendly restaurant. There was even a sign in the restaurant letting you know a dog might be at the next table.

If you're traveling to Yeongjong or Eulwangri with your dog, finding a restaurant can be a bit of a hassle, right? If you're looking for a place to eat with your dog, this one's worth keeping in mind.

Grab kimchi and bean sprouts at the self-serve side dish corner

On one side of Haesanggung there's a self-serve corner where you can grab extra side dishes. You can take as much kimchi, bean sprouts, and other basic side dishes as you'd like — though as the sign says, just take a little at a time, as much as you need😊

The basic side dishes were kimchi, bean sprouts, and cabbage salad, which paired well with the spicy octopus stir-fry. The bean sprouts in particular were even better when mixed into the octopus stir-fry and rice.

The whole-octopus pancake at Haesanggung is the showstopper

After a short wait, the big whole octopus pancake came out first. True to its name, a whole octopus sits on top of the pancake, and the look of it was seriously mouthwatering😆

It was packed with green onion and other ingredients, topped with chewy octopus, making it feel much heartier than a regular pancake. The edges were golden and crispy while the inside stayed moist — great texture too.

The pancake was also quite large, so by the time we'd been digging into it before the octopus stir-fry even arrived, we were already getting full.

And then the octopus stir-fry I'd been waiting for arrived‼️ This was the dish I was most looking forward to that day. I'd been searching for good octopus stir-fry on Yeongjong Island and ended up here, and personally, I really enjoyed it.

It's spicy in a way that keeps you coming back for more — good enough to eat the octopus alone, but even better with rice.

Mixing bean sprouts and octopus into the turmeric rice

The Haesanggung set also comes with a pretty yellow turmeric rice.

I piled the octopus stir-fry generously on top of the turmeric rice, added the bean sprouts, and mixed it all together — it worked really well. As the octopus stir-fry sauce soaked into every grain of rice, the spicy, savory flavor really came through.

If you're looking for good octopus stir-fry on Yeongjong Island, I'd recommend mixing in bean sprouts with your rice too.

Somyeon noodles tossed in the leftover octopus sauce

Of course, octopus stir-fry needs somyeon (소면, thin wheat noodles) too. I loaded up the springy noodles with plenty of the octopus stir-fry sauce and mixed it all together, haha.

The spicy sauce clung to the noodles in a way that had a completely different charm from the rice. Taking a bite of noodles with a piece of chewy octopus on top was really delicious.

Between the rice and the noodles, we were stuffed, but it was hard to put our chopsticks down😂

Seafood kalguksu packed with clams and shrimp

After the spicy octopus stir-fry, we also tried the warm seafood kalguksu. The noodle soup was packed with mussels, shrimp, and clams.

The big clams caught your eye right away, so it looked hearty, and eating the hot broth with the noodles warmed us up from the inside. So it's also worth checking out if you're looking for seafood kalguksu near Eulwangri or near Inspire Entertainment Resort.

Is Haesanggung worth a stop in Eulwangri? Final verdict

When you're craving something spicy on Yeongjong Island and want octopus stir-fry, seafood kalguksu, and pancake all together, the Haesanggung set menu was a solid choice. The set for two we ordered at ₩57,000 came with octopus stir-fry, whole octopus pancake, seafood kalguksu, and turmeric rice, so the two of us ate really well and got completely full.
