This time, I decided to finally do the Yangyang tour I had been putting off for ages. I have traveled the Gangwon coast quite a lot—Goseong, Sokcho, Gangneung, Donghae, you name it—yet somehow Yangyang and I never quite crossed paths. Whenever I went to see the sea, my feet always seemed to head somewhere else. So this time, I made up my mind, booked a place to stay, and came down to soak up the Yangyang coast with my whole body.

Sashimi takeout for dinner at our Yangyang accommodation
You cannot come to the coast and skip good food—it would practically be rude. And when it comes to the sea, sashimi is simply the answer, right? Wanting a relaxed dinner at our accommodation, I looked for a good sashimi takeout spot in Yangyang and found Eosiljang Sashimi Takeout.
To be honest, Abeulnam's household has standards when it comes to sashimi. My wife is not especially fond of the casual makhoe-style sashimi, loosely mixed and served. Her belief is that even the same fish feels more properly treated—and tastes better—when it is neatly sliced and arranged. As for Abeulnam, I am the sort of person who thinks anything that goes into my mouth tastes the same and tastes good, but for a peaceful trip, following my wife's preferences is always the winning move.
After looking carefully, Eosiljang Sashimi Takeout was the place we chose. First, the location passed the test. It is a convenient distance from major sights such as Sol Beach Yangyang, Seolhaeone, Naksansa Temple, and Hajodae, making it perfect for a stop before heading to your accommodation. For Abeulnam, who cannot stand an itinerary with tangled routes, it was a very satisfying location.
It is a takeout-only shop, but even the building was unexpected
When I first arrived, the unexpected view caught me slightly off guard. A sashimi takeout specialist usually brings to mind a no-frills fish market with tanks packed together and orders rapidly packed to go, but Eosiljang had quite a different atmosphere. The building itself was rather stylish and sits on high ground, so I felt good from the moment I entered. It is not directly in front of the sea, but the elevation gives it a distant view of the water.

I had come for takeout, but the unexpected scenery made me stop for a moment to watch the sun setting over the sea. Perhaps because we arrived right in that golden sunset window, I even thought how nice it would be to eat here instead. One piece of sashimi with one slice of sunset—that felt like the real meaning of travel. I came for takeout and ended up taking in the atmosphere, too, so the trip started on a high note.
A selection that changes with the day's seasonal catch

The biggest feature here is that they use seasonal fish caught that day.

At most sashimi restaurants, you end up eating the same fish listed on the menu every time. Here, though, the assorted sashimi is put together with the best fish available that day, depending on when you visit. It has the fun of a random omakase—you never quite know what will arrive.

Rather than serving only set fish, they offer the freshest seasonal fish of the day, which made it feel much more trustworthy. Instead of a sashimi place crowded only with tourists, it had the genuine charm of a local spot. Freshness is everything with sashimi, and the fact that you can enjoy fish caught that very day is reason enough to choose this place.

Three servings of assorted sashimi, packed in three containers
Abeulnam ordered the assorted sashimi for three. It was ₩75,000. When I unpacked it, the spread was far more generous than I expected and my mouth literally fell open. Along with the main assorted sashimi, there were abalone, sea squirt, shrimp, and whelk. With so many things to pick at, I cannot imagine a better setup for a drink at the accommodation.
The packaging was especially interesting: they divide the sashimi according to the number of diners. Since we ordered three servings, it came in three separate containers. At first, I wondered why they had gone to the trouble, but once we laid everything across the table at our accommodation, it was easy for each person to keep a container in front of them and the whole spread looked much neater. The portions were generous, too, so travelers weighing both value and quality should be more than satisfied.
The thick-cut sashimi had an even better bite

Abeulnam considers thickness very important when eating sashimi. If it is sliced too thinly, there is no bite to it and it hardly feels like eating sashimi. Eosiljang's pieces were not enormous, but they were cut thickly, giving them a wonderful texture in the mouth. We sampled the different kinds of sashimi in turn,

and added seafood between bites, so there was never a chance to get tired of it.

On a trip, setting out a full sashimi spread at the accommodation with a cold beer finally made it feel as though we had truly come to Yangyang. My wife was also hugely satisfied with the neatly arranged sashimi rather than the makhoe style. Winning over even my picky wife's palate meant this menu choice was a success.
If you are looking for sashimi takeout for your Yangyang stay

If you are planning a trip to Yangyang and looking for a good sashimi takeout option to enjoy comfortably at your accommodation, Eosiljang Sashimi Takeout is worth considering. The appeal is that the selection changes each visit because it uses seasonal fish caught that day, and the abalone, sea squirt, shrimp, and whelk alongside the sashimi made it an excellent accompaniment to drinks. More than anything, I personally loved the thick cuts, which gave every bite a satisfying chew.

For anyone who would rather have a cozy piece of sashimi at their accommodation than sit in a restaurant amid a long stretch of bustle, or for travelers around Sol Beach, Seolhaeone, Naksansa Temple, or Hajodae, this is a pretty good alternative. If Abeulnam comes back to Yangyang, I will pick up sashimi here again without hesitation. When you have come all this way to see the sea, the trip is not complete until you have eaten some delicious sashimi.
Things to check before visiting
From Monday through Thursday, business hours may change depending on the fishing schedule. To avoid a wasted trip, it is best to call ahead before visiting. Also remember that, because this is a seasonal selection, the fish may change depending on that day's supply.
I enjoyed a proper seasonal assorted sashimi spread from Eosiljang Sashimi Takeout in Yangyang. The pleasure of one piece of sashimi picked up from a place with such a nice atmosphere was enough to make me forget the fatigue of travel. I highly recommend it to anyone tired of predictable sashimi restaurant selections or wanting fresher fish caught that day. It will make a cozy dinner at your accommodation even more complete.
