Today I visited Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch (떡마마 청주율량점), well known as a go-to Cheongju rice cake shop for thank-you gift rice cakes. It's on the main road you'd walk along from Uam-dong toward Juyung-dong or Yullyang. I'd been meaning to go and meaning to go, and finally made it around 4pm on a Friday right after work.
What is the Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang shop like?
The store is really pleasant and spacious, so brunch works fine here, and full meals too — you can use it just like a regular café. Coffee runs around ₩5,000.
With about 10 tables, you can probably get in without waiting, so if you're in Yullyang-dong or Juyung-dong and need a quick solo meal but don't feel like bread, I'd recommend a solo rice cake meal here.
They sell honey kkwabaegi (twisted doughnuts) and yakgwa (honey cookies), sweets I absolutely love. I closed my eyes and walked right past them, haha. Today's target was rice cake...
How many kinds of rice cake does Tteokmama sell?
Tteokmama Yullyang also carries lots of the classic rice cakes grandmas love — fresh songpyeon, mosi songpyeon (ramie-leaf half-moon rice cake), ssuk gaetteok (mugwort rice cake), and more.
Patsirutteok (red bean steamed rice cake), pizza sulgi, baeksulgi (white steamed rice cake), strawberry jam sulgi — all packed for single servings, great for taking to the office or bringing to a gathering.
There's also injeolmi (rice cake coated in powder), all soft and dusted.
And yakbap (sweet rice with nuts and dried fruit) — why does this stuff get more tempting the older I get?

If you're eating solo and want to try a few different flavors, 4 pieces seems about right; the ribboned 6-piece box is nice for a simple gift or thank-you. When I visited there were three fruits — Shine Muscat, strawberry, orange. Now I'm curious about kiwi too~~

This pizza sulgi was the one I most wanted to try!! I hear it's also sold by the full tray (9pc). I bought 4 — one for me, one for my boyfriend, and the rest for friends. ₩2,500 each.

How do the strawberry mochi and pizza sulgi taste?
The strawberry fruit mochi doesn't have the thin skin you usually expect — it's clearly made by rice cake specialists, with a texture that's super chewy and stretches beautifully. The red bean quality is great too, and one piece is enough to fill you up pretty well. Personally, though, I found the orange even more delicious than the strawberry!!!
I ate the pizza sulgi on the move in the car so I forgot to take a photo, but I was glad to finally try the trendy, famous pizza sulgi — even reheated after a day in the fridge, it was still great. Not too rich, mild and clean with that distinctive sulgi texture, it came together better than I expected!
Would you go back to Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang?
100% yes. The store is pleasant, and next time I'd like to come back for a solo brunch meal!
