Gwangju galbi restaurant with 900g Idong galbi: Jeongwon Galbi

In short

Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is a two-floor galbi (beef rib) restaurant on Gyeongancheon-ro in Songjeong-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. At a weekend lunch with her husband and child, the writer grilled a 900g platter of handmade Idong galbi cut from chuck flap (74,000 won), added side dishes from the self-bar and finished with bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles). With on-site parking, strong ventilation and a kids' spoon-fork set and seaweed snack brought to the table, Jeongwon Galbi made for an easy family meal.

Hi everyone, this is Jjinsaedaek. Sometimes on weekends you just want a hearty meat meal, right? Hahaha! This weekend I went with my husband and child to a Korean BBQ spot in Gwangju, Gyeonggi.

A weekend family outing to a Korean BBQ restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi

While debating where to go, I picked a place with easy parking and a spacious-looking dining room — Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch.

Where is Jeongwon Galbi in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, and what are its hours?

Let me lay out the details of this place.

  • Location: 110 Gyeongancheon-ro, 1st–2nd floor, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (across from Woorim Fill-U Apartments, Songjeong-dong)
  • Hours: Daily 11:00–22:00 (last order 21:10)

Navigation made it easy to find, and coming in past the Tous les Jours building, the entrance was easy to spot. Given its location, it's also a great stop if you're out for a walk along Gyeongancheon stream, visiting Gyeongan Market, or heading toward Hwadam Forest or Gonjiam.

Weekend lunch parking and what the restaurant feels like inside

Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch is a spacious two-story building, clearly comfortable for family groups. It was busy for a weekend lunch, but parking was well set up, so even less confident drivers should be able to visit without much trouble. Looking around, the tables were spaced generously apart, and I especially liked how neatly the self-bar was kept.

What side dishes and self-bar does Jeongwon Galbi have?

I care quite a bit about how fresh side dishes are when eating meat, and true to a galbi restaurant in Songjeong-dong, the seasoned crab, various wraps, pickled onions, kimchi and gochu-ssamjang muchim all tasted crisp and freshly made — perfect to pair with the meat!

If you run low on any side dish, you can casually grab more from the self-bar without hesitation! I also liked that the table stayed dry and clean, without the usual stickiness you get at BBQ places haha.

Handmade Idong galbi platter: 900g for 74,000 won

We ordered the handmade chuck flap galbi (a tender beef cut) platter, 900g, for ₩74,000. Since it's 900g of beef ribs, the portion was plenty even for two adults plus a child.

Why Jeongwon Galbi works for a meal out with a child

Feeding a kid at a restaurant is always a bit of a hassle, but Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch handed us a spoon-fork set and dried seaweed as soon as we sat down — such a thoughtful touch. With rice, seaweed, and small cut pieces of the sweet meat, my child happily munched away, hahaha.

Thanks to that, my husband and I could eat much more comfortably too. That said, this isn't a place where staff grill the meat for you — we had to do the grilling ourselves.

How to grill marinated galbi without burning it

Because the meat is deeply marinated, it can burn in an instant if you're not careful, so you need to keep flipping it the whole time. To fully enjoy the flavor that earns this place its Korean BBQ reputation in Gwangju, you'll need to put in the effort of flipping often so it doesn't burn haha. Once the signature marinade aroma rises up and you take a bite of a well-grilled piece, you really feel like you nailed it. Also, put the garlic in with sesame oil since it tends to fall through the grill grates if placed directly on top!

It's also clean and delicious paired with the pickled onions.

I especially love pairing spicy bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold buckwheat noodles) with galbi for dessert, so I wrapped the meat around the noodles and ate it all up. Both the kid and the adults left this meal satisfied and full, matched to everyone's taste.

Is Jeongwon Galbi worth it for a family outing?

Being able to park stress-free and eat in a spacious dining room feels like a big plus for a family meal out. The ventilation was also good, so we didn't leave with heavy meat smell stuck to our clothes. If you're looking for a galbi restaurant in Songjeong-dong or want a day of grilling up a big platter of beef with the family, this place is worth a visit.
