Gonjiam kimchi jjigae restaurant with free rice refills: Oneuldo Utja
In short
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a kimchi jjigae and pork duruchigi restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, near Gonjiam. On a Sunday lunch, a family of four plus a younger brother and his wife made six people and ordered 3 servings of kimchi jjigae, 2 servings of pork duruchigi, 2 sotbap (hot pot rice) and 2 ramyeon noodle add-ins, with free scoops of rice from the shared rice cooker keeping the group fed. Oneuldo Utja Chowol works well when one table wants both a stew and a rice-topping dish.

On a Sunday for lunch, I went out for a family meal with my close friend's family, a couple I hadn't seen in a while.

With my family of four plus the couple, that's six of us total, so we went back and forth on where to eat and, in the end, landed on Oneuldo Utja Chowol again.

Honestly, my family already goes to Oneuldo Utja Chowol pretty often, so even when we say "let's try somewhere new today," the moment we crave a good meal, we naturally end up back here.

This time too, we ate well and left completely full.

Where is Oneuldo Utja Chowol, and is there parking for a group?
Oneuldo Utja Chowol is at 1F, 43-1 Sansu-ro, Chowol-eup, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. It's technically in Chowol-eup, but it's also an easy drive from Gonjiam, so it works well for a family outing like ours. There's parking in front of the restaurant and it's set up for groups too, which is why we keep coming back for family meals or dinners with a bigger crowd.

This time we ordered 3 servings of kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), 2 servings of pork duruchigi (stir-fried spicy pork), and 2 sotbap, plus added 2 ramyeon noodle add-ins. Being a bigger group meant we could try both menus together, which was nice.
Kimchi jjigae or pork duruchigi? With six people, order both
First off, kimchi jjigae is one of my favorite dishes at Oneuldo Utja Chowol.

The kimchi jjigae comes with generous chunks of pork, kimchi, and tofu, and the broth is rich and on the spicier side.

When you simmer the meat in the broth for a while, the flavor from the kimchi and the savoriness of the pork come together into something that just demands rice.

This time we added a ramyeon noodle add-in on top.

Once the ramyeon noodles go into the bubbling kimchi jjigae and soak up the broth, it's a whole different experience!

My kid loves ramyeon noodles too, so she ate it up happily haha. Pork duruchigi, on the other hand, has a completely different appeal from the kimchi jjigae.

Unlike the kimchi jjigae, which you eat with plenty of broth, the duruchigi has sauce deeply soaked into the meat and kimchi, making it perfect to pile onto rice.

The pork, fermented kimchi, bean sprouts, and shredded green onion all come together for a good chewy texture too.
It's great wrapped in lettuce with meat and kimchi, and just as good piled on warm rice. So if you're looking for a Gonjiam-area restaurant and want something soupy, I'd recommend the kimchi jjigae — if you want something hearty to mix into rice, go for the duruchigi.
Sotbap and free rice cooker refills: why big groups eat easy here
One thing that quietly matters a lot at Oneuldo Utja Chowol is the sotbap. The freshly made sotbap has glossy grains and a nutty aroma, and it's genuinely good even eaten plain.

Spoon a bit of the duruchigi sauce or kimchi jjigae broth over the rice and a whole bowl disappears in no time.

But this time I learned something new. The rice kept in the shared pot can be scooped out and eaten for free. You don't have to order a lot of sotbap upfront — if you run low, you can just grab more from the rice pot, which was especially convenient with a bigger group.

Eating at Oneuldo Utja Chowol with a 7-year-old, no egg roll needed
In the past, I used to order the jumbo egg roll every time we came to Oneuldo Utja Chowol because of my 7-year-old daughter. But she's grown up a bit now and can handle spicy food fairly well, so this time we boldly skipped the egg roll.
As expected, once I chopped up the kimchi and meat small and mixed it into her rice, our little big eater said,
It's spicy but it's good!
and ate it right up haha. Seeing her enjoy even the ramyeon noodles made me realize how much she's grown. If you're a family like mine looking for a place to eat with kids, adjusting the menu a little seems to work just fine.
In the end, we walked out full again that day. I hadn't had a drop of alcohol, but somehow I felt like I'd just had hangover soup — completely satisfied and settled. I think that's why we keep coming back.
Rather than a fancy meal out for a special occasion, this is the place for when you just want to sit comfortably with family and eat warm rice. That's what Oneuldo Utja Chowol is for us.
If you're looking for a Gonjiam-area restaurant where you can enjoy both kimchi jjigae and duruchigi, or fill up on sotbap too, it's worth a visit. Next time I go, I'll probably order both the kimchi jjigae and the duruchigi again haha.
