When I visited, even on a weekday evening the seats filled up quickly and there was a wait!!

Inside Susan Jang: seating that suits small groups

Susan Jang isn't a very big place. Instead, it has a cozy space with bar seats, table seats, and group seats, which made for a comfortable vibe. That said, since the place itself is on the smaller side, it might be hard to fit a large group all at once — it felt more suited to small gatherings or drinks with friends.

It'd probably be convenient to make a reservation ahead of time. The kitchen is also open, so you can watch the food being made while you sit. Watching the staff prep and cook the seafood was fun to see while waiting for the food to come out. The staff were also friendly, so I could eat comfortably.

Fresh seafood straight from the tank at Susan Jang

One thing that stood out at Susan Jang was the tank inside the restaurant. Since the tank is right there in the shop, you can see all kinds of seafood swimming around. Freshness matters so much for seafood, so being able to see it alive with your own eyes was a nice touch.

In particular, I got to watch them catch a blue crab straight from the tank and steam it — wow... watching the crab get steamed right there made me want to order the crab menu next time haha. They also shelled the raw shrimp right there and put it on the plate still twitching. A little scary, but it just shows how fresh it is~

The complimentary starter is grilled fish

As soon as I sat down, grilled fish came out as the complimentary side dish. It looked like grilled flounder or something similar — a complimentary side I hadn't expected, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Grilled fish served as the complimentary side dish

Usually at bars you get a simple complimentary side dish,

but having grilled fish as the default side dish was a nice way to whet the appetite before the drinking even started. It was seasoned nicely salty, so it was good on its own and also worked well as a drinking snack!

Raw shrimp sashimi, 29,000 won

The first thing we ordered was raw shrimp sashimi! As soon as it arrived, the look of it caught my eye. You could really feel the springy texture unique to raw shrimp, and since it's such fresh seafood, the texture when you chewed it was great. Freshness really matters for shrimp sashimi!

Having watched the seafood being kept in the tank right in front of me made it feel even fresher when I ate it. The shrimp had that sweet flavor and springy texture unique to shrimp, making it perfect as a drinking snack. They also gave us a spicy sauce on the side, so I didn't get tired of the flavor. If you love raw shrimp, you have to try this!

Table setting with the mini assorted seafood platter

Mini assorted seafood platter, 42,000 won: 3 aged sashimi + 3 seafood

The second dish was the mini assorted seafood platter for ₩42,000. This dish is made up of 3 kinds of aged sashimi plus 3 kinds of seafood, so I liked being able to try several things at once. It was a great choice for when you want to taste a little bit of a variety of sashimi and seafood rather than ordering just one dish.

The aged sashimi had a chewy texture, and each type of seafood had its own distinct texture and flavor, so it was fun picking through and trying each one.

The staff even threw in some gizzard shad on the house haha. Thanks to that, I got to eat an even wider variety than the original set, which made the meal that much more enjoyable.

Having several types of seafood all on one plate made for a really appetizing visual too! If you love sashimi, I'd say it's worth ordering a platter like this to enjoy a variety together instead of sticking to just one type of sashimi.

Ramyeon ordered to finish the meal

Finishing with ramyeon, 5,000 won

You know how after eating seafood you always end up craving some soup at the end, right? Haha. So we finished off with ramyeon (instant noodles). Ramyeon made by someone else really is the best,, 😂 After all the seafood and sashimi, finishing with a warm bowl of soup hit just right.

It's also good as a drinking snack, and the spicy broth warms you right up haha.

Is Susan Jang worth it for a seafood drinking spot in Gojan-dong?

Overall, Susan Jang was an izakaya with a great atmosphere for enjoying fresh seafood with a drink. Having a fish tank inside and an open kitchen made watching the food come together fun, and the staff were friendly, which made the whole visit comfortable.

With bar seats, table seats, and group seats all available, it was convenient to use. Evenings tend to draw a lot of customers coming for work dinners or drinks, so there may be a wait — if you're planning to visit, it might be worth arriving a bit early or checking ahead.

The biggest draw was being able to enjoy a variety of fresh dishes like raw shrimp sashimi, aged sashimi, and seafood. If you're looking for a good sashimi restaurant in Gojan-dong for sashimi or seafood with a drink, this would suit you well, and it's also worth recommending for anyone looking for a cozy izakaya in Gojan-dong.

This felt like the kind of place I'd think of when meeting friends in the evening for fresh seafood snacks and a glass of soju 🍶
