Horangi Gul Gojan Branch is an izakaya in Gojan-dong at 105, 1st floor, Gold Plaza, 185-20 Gwangdeok 2-ro, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do. I'd been curious about it for a while since it's already famous, and this time I went solo! I'm an intestine killer at heart, so I really wanted to try the beef gopchang-daechang stew — finally made it happen haha

Horangi Gul is a Gojan-dong izakaya famous for its beef gopchang-daechang stew, and indeed the stew made with beef small and large intestines is its signature dish. I went not long after opening, but by evening the first floor was completely packed with customers... There's seating upstairs too, so I'm thinking of coming back with friends next time. Even eating solo, I ended up with a hearty spread from stew to sides🤤

This time I ordered the beef gopchang-daechang stew for ₩18,900, mentaiko mayo gyoza for ₩13,900, and cheese risotto for ₩3,900. The stew is set with a timer, and once the set time passes, staff come flip it themselves.

When the timer goes off, staff check the state of the stew and flip it. Wait a bit and it's done right away...

Let's dig into the piping hot stew

No off odor from the daechang or gopchang at all! The gopchang had pretty large, soft chunks of fat inside, but personally, I remember the daechang being tastier than the gopchang. That distinctive nutty flavor of daechang was really great. It chews softly while that savory flavor bursts through, so as someone who loves intestines, I kept picking up more daechang.

The broth isn't heavy at all — it's rich yet remarkably clean! I figured with daechang in it, the broth would be greasy or heavy, but it was nothing like that at all — a clean, deep flavor that kept me spooning it up. The broth can't be refilled, but it was so delicious that I almost ran out of broth to mix with rice haha.

The stew had a variety of ingredients besides gopchang and daechang — meat, tofu, fish balls, and fried tofu skin — so it was fun picking through the different bits. I usually can't handle hot food well, but this was so good I kept eating until my mouth was burning haha

Daechang dipped in yuzu soy sauce

As instructed, I tried dipping it in the yuzu soy sauce, and that was delicious too. Eating it with the stew broth centers on a deep, nutty flavor, but dipping it in yuzu soy sauce added that distinct fresh yuzu note for a whole different feel.

A plate of Horangi Gul's mentaiko mayo gyoza

I also ordered the mentaiko mayo gyoza for ₩13,900, which was a bit different from typical gyoza. The filling is wrapped in chicken skin, packed with moist, springy meatballs inside, so it had quite rich juices.

The seasoning wasn't too strong so it wasn't overwhelming, and the chicken skin felt like about 70% soft and tender texture with 30% chewiness mixed in. Adding the mentaiko mayo on top brought out a big burst of savory flavor. A bite of stew broth followed by a bite of gyoza was an especially great combo. After the rich broth, the savory, soft flavor of the mentaiko mayo gyoza kept me alternating between the two.

Finishing the meal with cheese risotto for 3,900 won

After finishing the stew, I couldn't just let that delicious broth go to waste haha. I'm not usually one to mix rice into broth, but I ended up adding the cheese risotto anyway.

The visual was a bit overwhelming, but since the cheese was melted thoroughly, it stretched out like strings, and it was delicious with all that cheesy savoriness.

Savory cheese stretching out like strings🥰 The stew broth itself was already delicious, and adding cheese on top brought out that rich, savory flavor even more. And the portion seemed like almost two servings... It was so generous that by the end I was completely full.
