Gwacheon Korean restaurant, mild flounder soup: Haenon Miyeok
In short
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, serving rich seaweed soup and neatly arranged full meals. I tried the deeply brothy beef seaweed soup, mild flounder seaweed soup, crispy seasoned flounder, and self-serve banchan. Verdict: a filling meal that changed my mind about paying for seaweed soup.

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch: Space and Parking
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Branch.

A refined space with the feel of an exhibition!
The moment you walk in, the clean, stylish interior catches your eye as if you have stepped into a gallery or art exhibition. This does not feel like a neighborhood restaurant where you just grab a quick meal; you can really tell they put plenty of money and soul into shaping the space. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal while feeling properly looked after amid its upscale, polished atmosphere.

Beef Seaweed Soup with Deep Green Broth
The unbeatable classic combination... deep flavor in a dark green broth!
All right, time for the proper main-dish assessment. First up was beef miyeokguk (seaweed soup), Korean food's ultimate cheat code and an unbeatable classic combination.
The Secret of the Green Broth
I do not know how much seaweed the kitchen put in, but the broth is not pale or clear at all—it is weighty and dark green from the start. The concentrated goodness drawn from the seaweed meets the beef stock in a rich way, giving the broth a deep, nutty flavor that clings beautifully to the palate.

A Proper, Deep-Rooted Flavor
Every spoonful fills your mouth with the gorgeous flavor of that weighty broth. The soft texture of the seaweed and savory stock come together to settle and warm you right up—a truly classic flavor at its most fundamental. Heh heh.
Flounder Seaweed Soup: I Was Wary of Fishiness, Then Fell for It
Fish in seaweed soup? I braced for fishiness, then came away wanting to bow down before this surprise!
Honestly, this was the order I found most suspicious—and thrilling. Clams or beef in seaweed soup, I get, but fish? Solmi is incredibly sensitive to fishy smells, so I ordered it half in doubt for comparison. But would you look at that—what a complete reversal!

There was not even a trace of the fishiness I worried about. Only soft, savory flounder flesh had been neatly picked clean into the soup, making it mild enough for children to eat comfortably. In particular, the nutty richness unique to fish fat had melted deeply into the broth, and personally, I found this flounder seaweed soup far tastier than the classic beef version.
Then there was the thoughtful touch of lightly scattering frying crumbs over golden-browned seasoned flounder, adding a crisp textural thrill! One piece of seasoned flounder was crispy outside and moist inside, delivering that irresistible crispy-outside, tender-inside contrast and completely smashing my prejudice against fish seaweed soup.
The Self-Serve Bar and Side-Dish Lineup
A neat full spread that gets even lazy Solmi off her butt!

No need for a long explanation of the side dishes—let me give you the essentials! This place runs a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to extra banchan (Korean side dishes), and the moderately tangy, well-fermented yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) and crunchy gungchae namul (braised stem lettuce) are remarkably neat and good. At an ordinary restaurant with bad food, I am too lazy to even look at the self-serve bar, but here the side dishes are so tasty that even a lazy person naturally gets up and walks over. That is its strange charm.
The pairing is especially fantastic: the sharp, tangy chicken-breast vinegar salad served as a basic side, plus the spicy-tangy scallop salad that acts as the perfect kick for the seaweed soup.
Solmi's Final Assessment
Finishing one bowl feels like getting a proper transfusion and recovering all your energy!
The combination of carefully simmered dark green broth and savory flounder proves that seaweed soup can absolutely be an exceptionally delicious signature dish worth paying good money for. Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch completely changed how I think about seaweed soup, so go when you want a rich broth that will fill you right up. One shot! 💥
